This post is dedicated to Tenzing, our newest hire this year and graduate of the Groundsworker program. As you can see, Tenzing now elevated himself from ground to the tree canopy! Ever since he joined as an apprentice, he expressed his desire of exploring the canopies and learn to climb. So during our annual aerial practice day, we took the opportunity to help Tenzing get into his first tree 🌳, this gorgeous Sugar Maple that has become our training host. We taught him how to propery set up and use an MRS system (yay for more knots!) , hipthrust and navigate branches by "poking up" and safely isolating his system. Last but not least, we practiced a few limbwalks and all we can say, Tenzing is a natural!! We cannot be more proud of him, for asking the right questions, listening and putting in practice the instructions to a T. And since climbing trees is not without effort, for putting his heart (and back) into it wholeheartedly. Thank you, Tenzing for all the joy you bring to our team and our workdays, you are a constant ray of sunshine and the kind of human spirit we all wish to be. Keep up the good work!!

Tree health starts with roots health and we understand the importance of proper water and nutrient absorption for a healthy, full canopy. When we looked at this beautiful Pin Oak in summertime, it was clearly showing symptoms of Iron Chlorosis. We knew that we had to try and improve its growing conditions because no matter how much fertilizer other companies may suggest applying, if the roots do not work properly, then there is no point in trying. Treatment without diagnosis is malpractice, right? And first step in establishing a root cause was a pH test, of course. We know that Pin Oaks need acidic soils to absorb Iron and we had a very alkaline environment. So we decided to do a root collar excavation to determine if the tree was suffering from girdling roots. Thankfully we did not find major interferences, but we removed all smaller roots that were having a negative impact. Then we amended the soil with sulfur, composted manure, triple mix, woodchips and all natural cedar mulch. All grass under the dripline was also removed. We instructed the client to keep checking the pH and reapply sulfur at 2 months intervals. But for now, we trust that we did the best we could to ensure that roots were healthy, the soil had good nutrients in the hopes of seeing the tree's health improve. We cannot wait to see how it does this year and we will reassess in the fall. Tree time is different than human time and we explained the client that changing a growing environment takes time and progress might be slow. But at least we didn't just slap some "spring fertilizer" on a called it a day. Next time you think about hiring a company to fertilize your trees, make sure they are honest and know what the tree's actual needs are before throwing some generic fertilizer on twice a year. And that usually starts by looking at the roots and doing a soil test at a minimum. We say it again so it sticks: Treatment without diagnosis is malpractice. We don't do that, and we wish more companies were doing the same. Be the change they said...

Lichen,

I am not killing your tree. I am not a fungus, a moss, or a disease.

That gray-green, orange and pink crust on the bark of your oak. The leafy stuff on the branch. The dusty pale coating on the fence post.

I'm a lichen. And your tree isn't sick. It's certified.

A lichen isn't a single organism. It's two organisms fused into one — a fungus and an alga living together as one body. The fungus provides structure, protection, and mineral absorption. The alga provides food through photosynthesis. Neither can live like this alone. Together they form something that resembles neither.

I grow on your tree. Not in it. My body attaches to the bark surface. I don't pe*****te the bark. I don't steal nutrients. I don't block light from the leaves. I don't cause decay. I'm using your tree as a surface the same way a bumper sticker uses your car.

Here's why I'm actually a good sign.

Lichen cannot grow in polluted air. Air pollution kills me. If your tree is covered in lichen, the air around your property is clean enough to support me. Ecologists use lichen presence to map air quality — more lichen species in an area means cleaner air. Your lichen-covered oak is a certificate of air quality you didn't know you had.

The tree you think is declining because of me is usually declining because of something else — drought stress, root compaction, pest damage — and I happened to be on the bark when you noticed. I was here before the decline started. I didn't cause it.

I grow a millimeter or two per year. The patch on your oak branch that's the size of your palm has been growing for decades. I was here before the deck was built. Before the house was painted. Before you moved in.

🌿 What to do about lichen on your trees:

- Nothing. Leave it. Lichen on bark is not a problem and removing it accomplishes nothing except damaging the bark surface underneath

- If a tree covered in lichen is declining, the cause is underground or internal — root damage, compaction, drought, boring insects. The lichen is a bystander, not the culprit. Investigate the roots and soil before blaming the surface

- Lichen on a fence post, stone wall, or garden structure is the same organism doing the same harmless thing. It adds texture and character and indicates clean air

- If lichen suddenly disappears from trees in your area where it used to thrive, that's a signal worth paying attention to — it may indicate a change in local air quality

- Lichen on fallen branches is a building material for hummingbirds and gnatcatchers. Both species press lichen flakes onto the outside of their nests with spider silk for camouflage. The lichen on your oak may end up on a nest in your yard

Don't scrape it off. Don't spray it. It's not the problem. It's the proof that the air is clean enough for it to exist 🌿

How do you recognize professionalism? Is there a measure for it? Reviews might be one thing, but watching a crew in action, listening how they interact, how much they enjoy the work, how well they clean up and how respectful they are is another thing. And if there was any doubt about our level of professionalism, we invite everyone to read our reviews (they are all real!), but also to look at some of these pictures (not AI generated!) that are showing how we care about property, how we care about trees (from roots to the canopy), how we care about wildlife, how we care about each other, how we care about safety, how we care about learning, and pushing ourselves to reach those heights and branch tips. Day in and day out, we strive to become better, to improve our techniques, find creative ways to solve work challenges, work positioning, efficiency, communication and collaboration. It is always work in progress, just as it is working every day with a different tree. And at the end of the day, besides going home unharmed and with the work completed safely, client satisfaction (including in form of home baked goods!), is what makes it all worth it. We are professionals and proud of how we make a difference in this trade. If you ever want to see how we do it, give us a challenge that we cannot refuse. You may have to wait until next year though, as our schedule is almost full for this year. And maybe that is a good indicator of the value and appreciation of our professionalism.
