⚠️ BLACK WIDOW SPIDER CONFIRMED IN THE BRAESIDE AREA ⚠️
On‑Guard Pest & Wildlife recently had the spider pictured below brought to us by a concerned grandparent whose grandchildren found it in one of their toys. Thankfully they were smart little cookies who knew what it was. Its identity has been confirmed as a Northern Black Widow spider.
Northern Black widows are native but uncommon in Canada and generally avoid people. However, they may bite if they are trapped, disturbed or handled.
Residents should take a few simple precautions:
• Wear gloves when moving firewood, boxes or stored materials.
• Use caution in sheds, garages, crawl spaces and other dark, undisturbed areas.
• Check outdoor footwear and gloves before putting them on.
• Teach children not to touch unfamiliar spiders.
If you believe you have been bitten, seek medical attention promptly and contact the Ontario Poison Centre at 1‑800‑268‑9017. Call 911 if someone experiences a serious or rapidly worsening reaction.
Finding one Northern Black Widow does not necessarily mean there is an infestation. This notice is intended to keep our community informed—not alarmed.
If you find a Northern Black Widow or are concerned about spider activity around your property, contact On‑Guard Pest & Wildlife for professional assistance.
