Most landscaping warranties are not what people seem to think they are.

A lot of homeowners hear the word warranty and assume that if something goes wrong down the road, they’re fully covered.

In reality, many companies follow the standard one-year warranty, which sounds fine at first until you understand when most problems actually show up.

At SSLC, we offer a three-year hardscape warranty because we believe if a project is excavated properly, built on a solid base, and installed the right way, it should be able to stand the test of time. We also believe a company should be willing to stand behind its work for longer than the minimum standard.

If you’re thinking about privacy in your yard this spring, planting is usually the first place people go.

But not all shrubs and hedges work the same, especially in Ontario. Between our winters, soil conditions, and how fast people want coverage, the wrong choice can take years to fix.

Here are a few options that actually work well:
- Cedar (Eastern White Cedar) this is the most common for a reason. It grows well in our climate, fills in nicely, and creates a clean, uniform hedge when maintained properly.
- Boxwood works better for lower, structured privacy. Great for defining spaces, but not ideal if you’re looking for full height screening.
- Hydrangea (like Limelight) not full privacy year-round, but great for seasonal coverage and softening a space while still looking clean and intentional.
- Spruce (for full coverage) if you want height and density, spruce gives you that. It takes more space but creates strong, natural screening.

The key isn’t just what you plant, it’s how it’s planned.
Spacing, soil prep, sunlight, and long-term growth all matter. That’s what determines whether it actually works in a few years or becomes something you have to redo.
