A while back we introduced you to some caterpillars that chew on Ontario’s trees. Click through to see a few more in the sawfly family that feast on conifer needles. Hemlock Woolly Adelgids begin to hatch from their egg sacs in June. These newly hatched nymphs, know as crawlers, will be moving around the hemlock looking for a place to start feeding before becoming inactive for the remainder of the summer.

With recent confirmed reports of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid along the Niagara River, it’s an important time to be on the look-out for this invader. If you see it, be sure to take a photo and report it by calling 1-800-563-7711 or visit www.eddmaps.org/ontario
