Oak railing with square black balusters I installed earlier this year for some friends of mine.

No dado/fillets here, balusters are mortised in.

If you swipe all the way to the end you can see the wall that used to be there.

They applied the stain/clear coat themselves 👌

to this woven design I made as the center of a serving tray. This was done a few years ago, and I've come a ways in my woodworking journey since.

What always bugged me about this tray is that the stripes don't line up perfectly at the joints. The cause? A bit of planer snipe as I was milling/gluing the striped portion together.

Now, it was a gift for my mother, so I've been able to see it age, and it's held up well. That being said, it's good to look back on previous projects and see where further care could've been taken to make the finished project even better.

In construction, and especially finish carpentry, a critical element when laying anything out is considering what the end use will be. Making things functional, user friendly, and cosmetically pleasing is a balancing act.

Typically, I Install robe hooks at 72" from the floor. However, in this case there's a shelf directly beside it. If it was set to a standard height, it would be in the way when setting boxes or folded clothes onto the shelf, so I set it at 68". It's in line with the closet rod to make it visually appealing, but its out of the way to avoid frustration by those who will live here.

It's really just common sense, but I've seen that lack of forethought in too many homes.

Solid fir baseboard & shoe moulding combo. 👌

I'm not usually a fan of shoe moulding, but occasionally it's necessary.

In this case, the home was built in 1905, and during the renovation they uncovered the original flooring, and decided to refinish it.

However, there was significant gaps along the walls, and the baseboard wasn't thick enough to cover them. Milling & installing this little shoe moulding was our solution.
