House centipedes are a common nuisance pest, and many homeowners understandably dislike their appearance in living spaces. However, they are also considered beneficial pests because they actively hunt and feed on other unwanted insects, including ants, silverfish, and spiders.
When house centipedes appear in your home, it usually comes down to two main reasons:
Moisture and Humidity: They thrive in damp, dark environments such as basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms.
Active Insect Populations: They are attracted to existing pest activity, meaning an established food source is already living inside your walls or lower levels.
Prevention Steps:
Control Humidity: Run a dehumidifier in damp areas to eliminate the moisture they need to survive.
Seal Entry Points: Caulk cracks along foundations, baseboards, and plumbing penetrations.
Remove the Food Source: Treat underlying insect populations to discourage centipedes from hunting inside.
