🚜 Is a pickup plow enough for a commercial property?

For some smaller parking lots, a pickup plow provides the speed and flexibility needed for routine snow events. However, one truck may not be enough as conditions change.

Parked vehicles can limit clearing patterns. Snowbanks can consume parking spaces and reduce visibility. Long storms may require several passes, while heavy accumulation can make loaders more useful for relocating or stacking snow.

Sidewalks, entrances and ice management also require their own equipment and planning.

The best commercial snow strategy is based on the property, not one machine. Before hiring a contractor, ask about loaders, sidewalk equipment, backup vehicles, snow relocation and how long storms are handled.

What does 600 tonnes of salt look like? A lot. 😂🧂
More importantly, what does it mean?
For Ainger, building a major salt reserve before winter is about preparation.
When winter conditions create increased demand, we want our crews focused on servicing properties, not scrambling to source the materials needed to do the job.
The goal is not “more salt.”
It is more preparedness, more supply control and a stronger winter operation. ❄️

🚜 What does the Barrie Snow Plow Tracker actually tell you?

The City’s tracker shows when a municipal road was last serviced. However, “serviced” does not always mean plowed. The road may have received salt, sand or brine instead.

It also does not show whether your private parking lot, loading area, entrances or walkways have been cleared.

For Barrie property managers, the tracker is useful context during a storm, but it should support your commercial snow plan, not control it. Your property still needs its own service triggers, priority areas, snow-storage plan and communication process.

Learn how to use the tracker properly and what it cannot tell you:

What happens when a piece of snow equipment breaks in the middle of a storm? ❄️🚜
That’s why backup equipment matters.

During a winter event, a broken blade or equipment issue can’t become the reason a property gets left behind. Having backup equipment ready along with compatible parts and systems helps reduce downtime and allows the team to get back up and running as quickly as possible.

It’s one of the behind-the-scenes parts of snow management that customers may never see, but it plays an important role in keeping operations moving when conditions get challenging.

At Ainger Group, preparation isn’t only about watching the weather. It’s also about being ready for the unexpected.

Why doesn’t the same amount of salt work in every winter storm? 🧂❄️

Temperature plays a major role in how salt performs on snow and ice. As conditions change, factors like surface temperature, sunlight, and the severity of the cold can all affect how a property should be treated.

That’s why effective snow and ice management isn’t simply about spreading more salt. It’s about understanding the conditions and adjusting the approach accordingly.

When temperatures start dropping toward -9°C and below, those decisions become even more important.

At Ainger Group, we believe good winter maintenance starts with understanding the conditions before deciding how to respond.

Snow removal today is about a lot more than putting a plow on a truck. ❄️📍

At Ainger Group, technology helps us make more informed decisions throughout a winter event. From onboard GPS and automated cameras to ongoing weather monitoring and tracking salt applications, these systems give our team better visibility into what’s happening in the field.

That means our team can monitor changing conditions, understand what’s happening across a property, and use real-time information to help guide our response.

For commercial snow and ice management, preparation, documentation, and technology all play an important role in keeping operations organized throughout the winter.

It’s not just about reacting to the storm it’s about having the systems in place before it arrives.

“Milder winter” sounds pretty good until the parking lot freezes overnight. 😅❄️
A very strong El Niño is developing for winter 2026–27, but that does not mean we get to skip winter.
Seasonal averages can be warmer while individual snow events, freezing temperatures and refreezing still create plenty of work.
That’s why winter preparation should be built around changing conditions, not one long-range headline.
Equipment ready. Salt ready. Snow-storage plan ready. Then we let winter do whatever winter has planned. 🌨️

What happens when your snow contractor stops showing up in the middle of winter? ❄️

We’ve seen situations where the season has already started and a property owner suddenly needs someone to take over their snow and ice management contract.

When winter conditions hit, there isn’t much room for downtime. Property owners need a contractor who understands the responsibility, has the equipment and team in place, and can respond when it matters.

At Ainger Group, we’ve been called in to help take over properties mid-season, get things back on track, and provide dependable service for the remainder of the winter.

Choosing the right snow contractor from the beginning can make a big difference.

Good snow and ice management starts before the truck even moves. ❄️

Choosing between salt, sand, or another material isn’t just a last-minute decision. The weather forecast, temperature, changing conditions, and what’s expected throughout the event all play a part in deciding what gets loaded into the truck.

Conditions can change quickly, which means the approach may need to change with them.

It’s all about looking ahead, understanding the conditions, and making the right call before heading out.

A little planning before the storm can make a big difference once the snow starts falling.
