For a trim carpenter, one of the most important tools for efficiency, is a good mitersaw setup! There are few ok mitersaw wing tables available on the market, but I’ve always preferred making my own table tops.. There are multiple reasons for this, but mainly so I can make them as I want them! This set is a total of 18’ long, but each side is made of 2 separate pieces, with a bolt bracket system to connect the two halves together.. This allows for both a very compact breakdown, as well I can easily use a much shorter setups if space is a constraint. The tables are made of birch plywood with a piece of steel tubing 1” sandwiched in a datoed pocket, gorilla glued and screwed together. The idea of this was to be able to make as compact of a bench possible, while maintaining a perfectly straight flat table top. The stop block system was salvaged from my previous bench setup, that I built last summer, and learned some lessons on layout of these benches. I did modify it, adding the two offset tape measures on it, this allows us to set the block to a measurement, then if we are cutting multiple components, like say a door header, then door stop, then casing, we can offset the block to account for material thicknesses and reveals. There are a few mods I plan to do to further improve it, but so far very happy with this setup! And other then being huge! This mitersaw is actually very nice! Credit to for the battery charger on the bench idea!

We bad some time to fill the past 2 months, so we've been helping Chris on his own cool af old school house reno. This has been an interesting job, combining material from 2 old school houses one from the late 1800s the other from the 1920s. Nothing at all is straight forward or simple.. We first did the second floor 3 doors, the doors are a mix of 3 different doors, all cupped, bowed and out of square to start. We had 2 fully intact jamb sets, but had to replicate the third one out of period correct old ass wood.. The doors had architraves at the tops, all the bead mounding was Mia,... We replicated the bead mounding, and salvaged all the remaining pieces to make all 6 tops. We had 2 different bead board t&gs to use, so the green wider board one was used upstairs and the smaller blue boards on the main floor. I was very skeptical when I walked into a room of what most would call scrap wood, as our material. Very happy with the results and the experience to go along with it, now I just need to replace a few saw blades, lol

Prep prep prep!!! Huge t&g ceiling with white faux beams in the works on this one! This ceiling was absolutely horrendously out of level, and waaavy, prior to us getting to it! The top level portion was out by about 1 1/2", we opted to shim on top of the existing plywood, one corner we had to remove a piece of plywood as the ceiling dipped so badly in that area, amd other areas we had up to 3/4" spacers to create a level flat ceiling. We then sheated over top of that level straight surface. Down the slopes we ripped plywood strips to scab on the sides of the roof trusses, and with a combo of laser levels, and string lines we were able to make each slope ceiling match in slope to one another, as well the lengths from the very bottom point to the very corner where the level meets the angles ceilings are all the exact same length, this will allow our material to match in # of pieces to make it to the peak, as well any ripped pieces will be equal around the perimeter. While we had the ceiling open we decided to make our skeleton for out beam system. This skeleton is exactly layed out, straight and level, this will give me positive stopping points to lay out all my t&g, as well keep the beams perfectly straight, level and well secured in place.. These types of jobs take a ton of planning a head to make things work out nicely easy. Prep work is the absolute most important part of a job like this, without proper prep work, you'll end up fighting issues the whole way through the job, and the end product will never be nearly as good as it could have been with a bit of extra care taken in the beginning!

Well this is an interesting one! This is an old home that they want to reuse the old trim and re install it on old and new parts of the house! The first part of this job we have been working on the existing and remains 5 windows in the house, as you see the trim delivery is not a delivery, but all the existing materials, both still in tack, and in pieces! The 5 windows were in rough shape to say the least, chunks missing, broken joints, etc.... The other challenge was the 5 windows now extruded 3/4-1" off the wall due to the removal of the lath and plaster and install of the drywall. So we had a 1 1/2" trim piece in the existing frames that was removable, after this we purchased a dremel saw because of its capabilities to cut within that 1 1/2" space, thua allowing us to remove the jambs. We then cut the jambs down to flush with the drywall and reinstalled them, then cut the stools to match tight to the walls. The existing casing was very interesting in how it was joined together as it had no glue, and was actually coped together on the inner most biggest piece. This is a 3 piece casing, the other 2 pieces were mitered together. These joints all remained as they were, but we reinforced as much as we could and replaced the odd really bad piece. We managed to rebuild some major missing pieces with bond, which is really satisfying seeing a rebiilt piece that once was not. I will not be able to see this job fully through as we are busy and squeezed this in last minute, but I would like to be as much apart of it as I could, as I like the challenge! In rhe mean time it will be in very capable hands with the gentlemen at . @ Collingwood, Ontario

It's been a minute since we did some shiplap walls! This is a pretty large job, we have all the trim to do, + 1000sqft of shiplap walls, 2000sqft of t&g pine, and about180' of white faux beams to do! Love this type of work with a lot of focus drawn to our work!! We have pretty much tied up the shiplap walls, and have begun the t&g ceilings. Due to the same storey a lot of people are finding these days with covid and material shortages we were only given 400sqft of our ceiling material from the supplier, so we have installed that and will now wait for the rest!! Cannot wait to see this job at the end with all the colours and construction out of the way!! This house also has probably the best views I've ever had on a job, from almost 3 sides as its at the tip of a small peninsula on lake Simcoe! @ Innisfil, Ontario

Couple finished or mostly finished shots of our most recent shoreview job. I thoroughly enjoyed this job and how it turned out. It was very interesting to me, to do this style with the continuous line though the base and casing.. ive done this style one time before about 5 years ago, it was interesting to see and remember how much my styles of carpentry and level of quality has changed in that 5 year period. I love to constantly evolve and grow as a carpenter and look forward to another 5 years of growth. Also realllly like the black room, or the theater room, loooks super sharp all black with chrome hardware!! @ Kempenfelt Bay

Our current job for is well under way!! This job has a really cool baseboard to casing connection. Because the base and casing are different sizes this is best achieved by a jack miter. Our process is as follows. Hang all door frames, then cut all the base, scribe all the base, then cut our casing sides to length, and cut the jack miter to match the height of the baseboard once scribed. Then we put 3 pocket screws into the base and casing connection, then assemble our miters. I have been constantly searching for the best casing preassebly method, and feel good about this process. I use clamp blocks that get screwed into rhe outer edges of the casing (yes a hole is left but its no bigger then a 15 gauge nail). Then we put one pocket hole in the inner part of the miter and a biscuit in the middle. The clamp is set towards the outside of the casing, and when combined with the pocket screw on the inner part of the miter we can get a lot of clamping pressure accrosss the whole length of the miter. Also leaving that screw in the inner miter makes it even that much stronger. We also opted to do jack copes (combination of a cope and a miter) to get the beinfit of a tight cope, but the pretty little miter at the top. This baseboard is 3/4" at the top and i think because of that tick edged top, it looks better mitered at the top then a butt joint. @ Innisfil, Ontario
