What an honour to complete a repair on a building with such history and presence. Originally built in 1889, it has witnessed generations of change and stood as a landmark in the Alliston community for well over a century. Contributing to its preservation through repairs to the pier beside the front entrance on the north elevation was a great privilege. 🇨🇦🧱⚒️ For a building of this age and significance, using the proper materials is essential. The repair was completed using King Sika HLM 500, a natural hydraulic lime mortar selected to better match the performance and character of the historic masonry.

A follow up to yesterday’s post…Take a closer look at the 16 inch thick solid masonry wall in progress. 🚧

Not only does this home carry presence from the curb, it holds up in the details.

The final look of the wall is controlled in the jointing stage. We overgrout the entire wall in one day to bring consistency across every joint along the full span.

Even with the natural variation and roughness in each stone, notice how flat and straight the wall runs. That’s the result of stringlines, plumb bobs and steps taken before the first stone is ever laid.

At this stage, joints are being filled and fully compressed. Brushing is the final step to refine and complete the desired overgrouted finish.
