🔥 National Forest Week: Building Wildfire Resilience

LNTCFS is undertaking a major wildfire-risk-reduction project along East Barriere Lake Road to help improve the resilience of the surrounding community and critical infrastructure.

Approximately 40 hectares were hand treated in 2025, with work underway on an additional 18 hectares in 2026. This is in addition to treatment occurring within the powerline right-of-way.

This work reduces forest fuels and helps create a more defensible landscape around the East Barriere Lake community.

🌿 National Forest Week: Improving Forest Knowledge

LNTCFS has completed a wetland inventory across the Community Forest, identifying and delineating more than 30 wetlands covering approximately 74 hectares.

This improved information will help ensure wetlands and associated soil, water, fish, wildlife and riparian values are properly considered in future forest planning.

It’s one example of how an area-based community forest can support more detailed inventories and informed forest management.

🌲 National Forest Week: Your Community Forest

To celebrate National Forest Week, we’re highlighting some of the ways the Lower North Thompson Community Forest benefits our forests and communities.

LNTCFS manages a Community Forest Agreement covering approximately 8,500 hectares east of Barriere. Revenue from forest operations is reinvested throughout the Lower North Thompson Valley.

We also have a value-added mill and firewood operation, creating local employment while making greater use of locally harvested fibre.

The Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society is looking for an experienced Part-Time Bookkeeper to join our team in Barriere.

This is an ongoing, primarily office-based position averaging approximately 15–25 hours per week. We're looking for someone with strong bookkeeping experience who can take responsibility for maintaining our financial records and work closely with our staff and external accountant.

💰 $30–$40/hour, depending on experience and qualifications
📍 Barriere, BC

Big thanks to BC Timber Sales for their Community Grant supporting the Gorman Lake Boat Launch Restoration and Safety Improvement Project!

The improved access structure is now safer and more reliable for local residents, anglers and visitors enjoying Gorman Lake. Project completed August 5, 2026 by our hardworking LNTCF staff and summer students.

Supporting "Dogs with Jobs" – A Growing Community Tradition!

The Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society was proud to support this year's Dogs with Jobs event by helping cover the costs of insurance and stock rental.

What began just five years ago with a single trial has grown into an incredible event featuring 10 trials, attracting competitors and spectators from across the province.

The momentum continued the following weekend as organizers hosted the Canadian Cattle Dog National Finals right here in Barriere. The event received outstanding feedback from participants, with many calling them "the best finals ever!"

Congratulations to the organizers, volunteers, competitors, and their amazing dogs for making these events such a tremendous success. We are proud to support events that bring visitors to our community, showcase local hospitality, and celebrate the incredible partnership between working dogs and their handlers.

The Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society is proud to support local lifelong learning!

This year, LNTCFS matched the funding provided through the Trans Mountain Adult Education Bursary Program, increasing the total bursary funding from $6,650 to $13,300. By doubling the available funding, we were able to support twice as many adult learners while maintaining individual bursary awards of $3,325.

The U15 boys battled hard throughout the tournament and are coming home with SILVER!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Lower North Thompson Community Forest Society booth at the Barriere Block Party!

It was a great opportunity to connect with the community, answer questions about what we do, and share how our non-profit community forest invests back into the Lower North Thompson through local projects, scholarships, donations, and partnerships.

Visitors tested their tree identification skills, entered to win 2 cords of firewood, picked up LNTCFS giveaways, and learned more about our firewood program and community initiatives.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to chat with us, follow our page, and learn more about how your community forest supports local people, projects, and forests. We look forward to seeing you at our next community event!
