We’ve started into some projects here and everyone is excited! This little job addressed some drainage problems, garbage bin storage and general aesthetic of a lower priority area of the yard. Photo 3 is the spagetti we encountered digging the trench for the drainage pipe….seems like enough rogers….

A wise woman once told me that it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. It was Sarah…yesterday…. quoting Tennyson. We were talking about peonies.
There are people out there who claim they don’t like them. (Can I just say that’s crazy?) They fall over, they get beaten down by heavy rain and their petals are everywhere. “They only bloom for a week or two and then they’re gone!” Here’s where the loved and lost comment came in.
For two weeks they take my breath away. For that brief window every year I am blown away that something so incredible just exists. There is no great purpose or logic, but there it is just being.
And then it is gone.
And it is totally worth it😍😍😍

Making progress on a very overgrown garden! Started the process last fall and we are slowly chipping away at taming the jungle. It will probably take a couple of seasons to get this back to a manageable state. Gardening is a process that takes patience and persistence. It is never done and perfect and you can walk away. So many life lessons in this…I leave you to ponder.

Ever wonder why you dig those thistles out of your garden but then you turn around and they’re popping right back up again? Well here’s the dirt…
Thistle roots (Canada thistle) can travel up to 15’ down into the ground. You are never getting all of that root. They will regrow from even a small piece of root material left in the soil. They can spread laterally even further. So what can you do??
Consistently knocking down any green growth as soon as it pops up will starve the roots and eventually they will die. They don’t love competition so adding in some shrubs or beefy perennials can help reduce the space they have to grow. They love heavy clay soil so adding organic material can help.
The good news is that Nature always has a plan and a purpose. Thistles pull valuable nutrients up from the subsoil and leave channels for air and water in compacted soil. They show up to help create better soil in desperate areas. They do the hard work to begin to rebuild for other plants to come in and thrive. Does this mean leave them in the garden? Heck no!!! All it means is that when we destroy and compact our soil to concrete and nobody cares for it, nature will start to rebuild on her own. Because she is genius!!

Long exhausting days and not the greatest weather make for a challenging job! So much gratitude for their hard work! If they are out in your yard let them know you appreciate their efforts. Knowing you are grateful makes it all worthwhile!
