Root With Roam: From Fixer-Upper to Dog Paradise! 🐾🏑

One of the main reasons we bought a house was so we could finally get a dog. Of course, buying a house built in 1900 meant we had about a century's worth of projects to tackle first. Once we'd made enough progress, we had a back deck built, opening up the backyard and giving Roam her very own kingdom to terrorize. Naturally, she took the responsibility very seriously.

That deck changed everything. It gave us easier access to the backyard, inspired our first proper gardening season, and turned the space into somewhere we could spend countless hours growing food, enjoying summer evenings, and watching Roam run amok. Turns out, all that hard work was worth it. Even if the dog thinks we did it all for her. Which, technically, we did.

Root With Roam: Falling for Autumn 🍁🐾

Out for a beautiful Sunday afternoon walk with Roam, taking in all the gorgeous fall colours. Autumn gives us a whole new excuse to get outside and explore. Not that Roam needs an excuse. She's always ready to drag us out for another adventure, preferably one involving plenty of sniffing and absolutely no schedule. πŸ‚

Fall in Ontario is one of the prettiest times of year, thanks to the changing colours of maple, oak, and birch trees. As daylight decreases and temperatures drop, chlorophyll breaks down, revealing the brilliant yellows and oranges, while some leaves produce vibrant reds. Nature puts on quite the show before everything freezes for six months. How thoughtful.

Root With Roam: Moving Mountains (of Dirt)! 🌱🐾

At the start of the season, we had a mountain of soil delivered to kick off our gardening adventures. Armed with the wheelbarrow my mom bought me, we moved it around the yard one load at a time. Naturally, Roam was there supervising every trip, making sure I did all the heavy lifting while she contributed absolutely nothing but enthusiasm. Management material, really.

We also experimented with HΓΌgelkultur, a German gardening technique that involves layering wood, branches, grass clippings, cardboard, and finally soil in raised beds. As the organic materials break down, they enrich the soil, retain moisture, and reduce the amount of dirt you need to buy. Basically, we're turning yard waste into future garden gold. Roam approves, especially since she didn't have to move any of it.

Root with Roam: Halloween costume acquired! πŸŽƒπŸ‘»

Roam's Halloween costume this year is going to be hilarious! πŸ˜‚ We originally thought she'd make the perfect main character, but after giving it some thought, we realized she looks suspiciously more like a character introduced later on. Apparently, she's been typecast before even getting the part. Any guesses who she's going to be? πŸ‘€

Halloween in Ontario is celebrated on October 31st, when neighbourhoods fill with costumes, jack-o'-lanterns, spooky decorations, and kids going door-to-door collecting candy. It's a tradition with roots in ancient Celtic celebrations, although these days it's mostly an excuse to dress ridiculously, eat too much chocolate, and pretend the decorations aren't terrifying the dog.

Root With Roam: Two Years of Pure Joy 🐾❀️

It's amazing looking back on almost two years with Roam. Somehow it feels like she's been with us forever and like we just brought her home yesterday. She's brought so much happiness, laughter, chaos, and unconditional love into our lives. We honestly couldn't imagine life without her. Even if she has somehow convinced us that our entire existence revolves around a red toy. πŸ˜‚

Roam is a Potcake, a mixed-breed Caribbean dog with roots in Barbados, where locals are known as Bajans. Her mom was rescued from Barbados and brought to Canada while heavily pregnant, so Roam was born here. We had no idea how big she'd eventually get, although the size of those enormous paws gave us a pretty good clue! Almost two years later, she's grown into the best decision we ever made. ❀️

Root With Roam: Another Trip to the Compost! 🌱🐾

Another trip to the compost bin, which apparently doubles as Roam's personal racetrack. She's making the most of these dwindling warm evenings, running around like a complete maniac while we do the actual work. Her supervisory skills remain questionable, but her enthusiasm is unmatched. πŸ˜‚

Our fancy composting system consists of a plastic bin, two cinder blocks to raise it off the ground, and some drilled holes for airflow and drainage. A real engineering marvel! The best part? We're already putting noticeably less garbage out on collection day. All those kitchen scraps and garden trimmings are slowly becoming nutrient-rich compost, which we're hoping will be ready for next year's growing season. Less waste, free fertilizer, and a tired dog. Not a bad return on investment! 🌿

Root With Roam: Berry Late to the Party! 🐾🫐

While throwing Roam’s beloved red toy around (because apparently that’s our full-time job), we noticed the blackberry bushes are STILL producing berries! Roam was naturally on hand to supervise this unexpected discovery. Hopefully, we’ll get one last decent harvest before Jack Frost decides gardening season is officially over.

We have a ton of blackberry canes, but they didn't exactly overwhelm us with fruit this year. Apparently, growing leaves was their top priority. We'll prune the canes that already fruited and thin out the rest to encourage a better harvest next year. Still, finding berries this late in October was a pleasant surprise. Better late than never, I suppose!

Root With Roam: Growing More Than Just Vegetables! 🌱🐾

What a fantastic growing season! From tiny seedlings to a backyard overflowing with vegetables, we couldn't be happier with our first official year of gardening. We learned a ton, made a few questionable decisions, and somehow managed to grow an impressive amount of food. Next year, we'll put all those lessons to good use and hopefully grow even more. Apparently, we're farmers now. πŸ˜‚

One of the best parts of gardening has been how much time it's kept us outdoors with Roam. She's become an essential part of the backyard, supervising every planting, harvest, and questionable gardening decision. What started as a way to grow our own food has turned into countless hours spent together outside. The vegetables are great, but having Roam by our side through it all has been the real reward. Even if she still hasn't figured out how to pull a w**d. β€οΈπŸ•

Root With Roam: Work Can Wait, Apparently! πŸΎπŸ”΄

Working from home is great, except Roam seems to think my job is entirely optional. Every day, she appears beside me with her beloved red toy, using some very convincing body language to explain that it's playtime. She's an incredibly smart girl who has mastered the art of interrupting a workday without saying a word. Apparently, paying the bills isn't nearly as important as entertaining her.

The funny thing is, Roam doesn't actually want us to have the toy. She wants us to want it. The entire game, no matter where we are, is trying to steal it from her. She absolutely loves having it thrown so she can chase it, but her greatest joy is proudly keeping it just out of reach. Fetch, according to Roam, is a game where the humans do all the work and she wins every time. πŸ˜‚

Root With Roam: The Garden That Refuses to Quit! πŸŒΆοΈπŸ†πŸΎ

Roam and I headed out to the garden today and were pleasantly surprised to find even more hot peppers, habaneros, and another eggplant ready to harvest! For mid-October, this garden is really overachieving. We're still bringing in a surprising amount of veggies, and Roam is naturally taking full credit for the success. Apparently, aggressive supervision really does improve crop yields.

With temperatures dropping, this weekend we'll finally be putting the garden to bed for winter. That means pulling out spent plants, clearing the beds, and adding some compost to help prepare the soil for spring. Roam will, of course, supervise the entire operation while contributing absolutely nothing to the actual labour. Another successful gardening season under her management! πŸ˜‚
