Carol Dibble Community Greenhouse & Waterfront Gardens Dedicated to keeping the Bear River community waterfront beautiful and creating space to improve food security in our region Reach out to us to become a member!

The Carol Dibble Greenhouse welcomes members from all backgrounds to grow in our community gardens. We promote the use of non-GMO products from the soil to the seeds while preventing food scarcity in our region and encouraging sustainability. All non-members to help themselves to the foods grown in the beds outside of the greenhouse. Our History:

In 2012, the Municipality decommissioned the Bear

River Sewage Treatment Plant. At that time, no future Municipal use of the property was identified and it was eventually scheduled for demolition. BRBT representatives Carol Dibble (retired Bear River Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator) and Kris Murdoch, pointed out that this was an opportunity to utilize the greenhouse for a positive community purpose. Prior to demolition, the request was brought to Council proposing that the glass structure be repurposed into a community greenhouse and educational hub. After a Public Hearing in 2015, Municipal Council unanimously voted to proceed with the project.

“We are very pleased to see members of the Bear River Board of Trade move forward with this initiative,” said Warden Reg Ritchie. “We had this tremendous resource sitting empty, not being utilized. Now, a community garden is in the works. It will create a wonderful meeting place for community members to socialize while learning about growing healthy, affordable food.”

Since Carol's passing, the Bear River Community Greenhouse has been renamed the Carol Dibble Community Greenhouse in honor of her impact on our community.

Community members in Bear River are exploring the creation of a local co-operative to help combat food scarcity while providing skills and resources locally. We are welcoming input because we want to hear from as many people as possible in the community to learn more about how we can create a space that serves everyone.

We want this co-operative business mission to be focused on being an inclusive, food and skill-teaching hub with the goal of building safe space for the community to share knowledge as a collaborative mission guided by the residents of Bear River. As a co-operative, we will collectively be able to own the business together through membership, meaning we each get to vote on decisions, and work as a community to provide for one another. Members can choose to be involved by simply being members, or participating in the day to day business activities.

A group of residents have come together with the idea but want to know more about how to best serve the community. With your input, we can better understand what our community needs most so we have a guide to create a space to collaborate and prosper together. Your opinions and feedback will play an important role in forming the business.

The plans may include a combination of various activities, including offering local groceries, like fresh produce, bulk goods, and pre made meals to-go. Other activities could include skill building workshops, a tool library, meeting spaces, while creating a village activity hub for connection, growth, and collaboration. Your input will help to shape the business.

In anticipation of the rain tomorrow evening, we’ve made the sad decision to cancel our final market of the season.

The BRNM team would like to say a gigantic and endless thank you to the vendors and community members that came out week after week and made the market happen - we hope to see you all next summer!

We are so grateful to the community that is forming around the market, and can’t wait to keep growing and having fun with you all!

We want to send a BIG thank you to all of our firefighters!

With so much going on in our communities this season, our greenhouse members are is so grateful to our Bear River Fire Department for helping us keep water in our greenhouse during this very dry season 🌱

Our community greenhouse always has relied on rainfall for our water catchments, but this season has not given us the ability to grow with droughts impacting our community so heavily, resulting in the need to have water brought in regularly

We want to send another big thank you to all of the departments and volunteers who are working tirelessly in our neighbouring community of West Dalhousie to keep us all safe during the Long Lake Wildfire

No job is too big or too small for these amazing volunteers, we can't express how much we appreciate all that you do for our community
