October is when I start getting more calls about mice and other rodent activity around homes here in Southwestern Ontario.

As the nights get colder, garages, basements, sheds, and wall spaces start looking like good places for rodents to get out of the weather.

Most homeowners don't see a mouse right away. It usually starts with scratching at night, a few droppings near storage, or something that looks like it's been chewed.

Those small signs are worth paying attention to because once rodents find a warm, protected place with access to food, they have a reason to stay.

I recently handled a rodent problem here in Southwestern Ontario that started with scratching in the basement and a few droppings near some storage boxes.

I usually want to know what’s happening behind the areas you can actually see when someone tells me they’ve sprayed for roaches several times but they keep coming back.

From there, I look at where the activity is strongest and what might be supporting it.

Sometimes there’s a small moisture problem. Other times there’s food residue behind an appliance or an opening that gives them a protected place to move through.

The treatment needs to focus on those active areas instead of simply spraying wherever a roach happens to appear.

Dealing with the activity is one part of the job. Correcting the food, moisture, and hiding conditions around it is what helps keep the problem from building back up.

If you've noticed a roach in your kitchen, there are a few basic things I recommend checking around the home first.

Start underneath the sink. Look for slow leaks, damp cabinets, or water collecting around plumbing. Then check behind the stove and refrigerator for crumbs and grease that don't normally get cleaned.

Keep cereal, flour, sugar, pet food, and other dry foods in sealed containers. I also recommend taking the garbage out regularly and avoiding dirty dishes sitting in the sink overnight.

These things may sound simple, but removing easy food, water, and hiding places can make a real difference.

September is when I start hearing from more homeowners about roaches around Southwestern Ontario.

Most of the time, it starts with one showing up late at night near the kitchen sink or stove. Then another one appears a few days later, usually around the same area.

Roaches are good at staying out of sight, so the ones you see aren't always the whole problem. They tend to hide behind appliances, underneath cabinets, and around plumbing where they have easy access to food, moisture, and warmth.

If you're seeing them repeatedly, especially at night, it's worth paying attention rather than waiting to see if they disappear on their own.

When I’m dealing with rodent activity, I’m not just looking at the droppings or the noises homeowners are hearing.

I want to know why the rodents picked that property in the first place.

Here in Southwestern Ontario, I usually start with the outside of the home, foundation areas, utility entry points, garage doors, vents, door seals, and any small gaps that could be giving them access.

Then I look at where they may be spending time once they get close to the home. Garages, basements, sheds, and storage areas are common because they’re quiet and sheltered.

Treating the activity is important, but if the entry points stay open, the problem can come back.

The best results usually come from handling both sides, what’s happening now and what allowed it to start.

Before you call anyone for rodents, take a slow walk around the outside of your home.

I always tell homeowners to check the small spots first — around utility lines, vents, garage doors, door frames, and the foundation.

Rodents don’t need a big opening to get inside. A small gap that looks harmless to us can be enough for them.

Then check your garage, basement, shed, or storage areas. If there are open bags of pet food, bird seed, or cluttered corners that don’t get moved often, those are worth cleaning up.

These small steps won’t always solve an active problem, but they can make your home a lot less inviting.

I start getting more rodent calls around Southwestern Ontario in July than a lot of people would expect.

Most homeowners think of mice and rats as a fall or winter problem, but I usually start seeing the early signs in summer.

It might be a few droppings in the garage. Scratching sounds at night. A bag or box in storage that looks like something has been chewing on it.

Those little signs are easy to ignore, but they usually mean rodents have found a way close to the home.

Around here, I often find activity around garages, basements, sheds, and storage areas because they’re quiet and don’t get disturbed much.

I recently handled a rodent prevention job that started with a few small signs just like that.
