For 8 years, our small family business has worked hard to earn a trusted reputation in Hamilton and surrounding areas. We’ve grown through word-of-mouth, won two local awards, and this year we were nominated again. Our goal has always been simple: deliver honest work and make our clients happy.
This year, we took on a project referred to us by another contractor — hardscape work alongside a pool contractor. Within two weeks, we informed the client there was far more concrete to demolish than expected. Our original quote didn’t include concrete removal, but we were pressured into continuing and made to feel that any extra costs were unreasonable. Looking back, we should have stopped there.
Delays began with the pool contractor, engineers, and constant changes to the design. Yet, as the “GC,” all blame fell on us. Decisions around pool coping changed multiple times, and the final product installed by another contractor was not the same as what was originally chosen with us. The extra cost was denied.
Accidents on the job, including damage caused by a third-party removal truck, were met with refusal to go through insurance. Payment for our work came late, and now we’re being told we were overpaid. The financial stress has affected our relationships with suppliers and service providers — and our peace as a family.
We are currently seeking legal assistance to recover what we believe is owed to us. We’re sharing our experience so other contractors — big or small — can protect themselves. Our situation is not unique. Many are afraid to stand up for their work, their reputation, and their families.
Our case involves Dayson Industrial Services (Owners: Ryan & Danielle Butcher), and we hope our story helps other trades avoid a similar experience.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support small, honest businesses like ours.
