We have been doing pole barn construction for something like 50 years. However, the landscape has really changed for pole barns in last five years. In 2003, the industry changed the type of preservative utilized on pressure treated material. Accordingly, the industry has been widely surprised that the new (since 2003) PT material has a much shorter lifespan than the PT material sourced in years prior.

Lead by the Canadian Farm Builders Association research was done in conjunction with Wood Preservative Canada to better understand the situation. Most pretreated materials that you find in all the lumberyards contain a small tag stapled to it stating not for ground contact! This little tag is often ignored by all, and so the industry is going to have a big wake up call over the next decade. Think of all the porch posts, deck posts, fencing posts that have been installed, simply with PT material and expecting a multi decade lifespan.

Now when building pole barns you need to be sure that you spec UC 4.1 or UC 4.2 posts. Ideally the lumber has incising on it, which allows for the PT application to better pe*****te the wood for preservation.

Now, in addition to the right material, when building pole barns, we wrap each post at ground level. This wrap has active preservative ingredients that are highly effective at the eradication of fungal colonization at the groundline. This unique bandage application system is applied and slit diagonal lines to expose the chemical and wrap on pole. This allows for deep localized preservative at the location of risk - ground level.

Breaking ground - another build to commence. Planning out the location, setting the grades, preparing the site, and moving dirt in the right directions to be efficient are all part of the process. Good excavation supports efficient construction but also a better end product. Never regret setting a build too low or not having the right subsoil or aggregate base. Getting the details incorporated into the equine riding arena are critical. Maybe of most importance is the footing - we say that as a builder! Good footing is crucial for performance ensuring the horse can move with confidence and especially be safe, not risking injury. Choosing the sand and components to develop a blend with right properties - traction, stability, bounce, dust control.

If you going to have a covered ring - why not do it in style. Good light with lots of glass surrounding. Good ventilation with side openings for natural ventilation and HVLS fans for air circulation. And beautiful kickboards for safety.

It helps the ceiling is nice and high - good for air quality and light - but you also won’t bump your head when clearing a jump! 😂

“Wow, the cows are very clean!”
“I need to look into the pack more, this barn is making me rethink”.

Those are repeated comments heard at the “Dairy Modernization” seminar and barn tours that featured a dairy barn build we completed in 2020. A dairy barn with pack housing, free traffic flow dairy milking robots, tunnel ventilation - a simply build in many ways. Yet, very effective. The cows are extremely comfortable, thus also productive. The manure pack management might have been an art, but in this barn it has become a science - well managed well, so that the pack has good culture within for compost, yet dry - resulting in comfort, freedom, and a dry pack bed.

A barn that caused for reflection.
