After several years completing my building apprenticeship I was one of four Fletchers employed carpenters who helped to strengthen, undercut and then build tracks and hydraulically push the near 150 year old Birdcage building up Franklin Road. We then dug a “cut and cover” tunnel which now serves as Auckland’s main north to south motorway through Victoria Park and pushed the Birdcage building back over the top of the newly built tunnel.
