Answer: Spotted Lanternfly

Nymphs and adults of spotted lanternflies have piercing-sucking mouthparts that allow them to feed on plant sap. This invasive pest has many tree hosts including the tree of heaven, grapes, apple, stone fruit, maple, etc. The adult lanternfly can puncture trees and drill into the bark and suck tree sap. Moreover, they release a sticky substance that can create sooty mold, resulting in less photosynthesis and loss of vigour of plants.

Adult midges are a group of tiny-winged flies that at first glance resemble mosquitoes. Midges can be distinguished from mosquitoes through their small mouthparts that are not elongated into a piercing-sucking structure for blood feeding. In residential settings, particularly houses built around lakes and ponds, adult midges often emerge in very large numbers and cause nuisance problems.
