Server ice damming on shingle roof. May roofs can be vulnerable to ice damming so to insufficient insulation at the eves location of your attic space. When ice forms in the trough and there is too much heat transfer to the outside it can cause thawing and freezing resulting in ice back ups. If the the dopwnpipes are frozen up the water will back into the attic space as the easiest place to go. It’s critical that there is an ice and water shield membrane at the perimeter of the roof to prevent these back ups. Most of time ice shield is enough to prevent ice from forcing its way into your attic space. Manufactures of the membranes like Grace & Bakor recommend installing a metal drip flashing over the ice shield that will prevent ice from finding its way thru the fascia and the first sheet of plywood or roof board which ever the case may be. The metal evestarter as it’s called is designed to extend into the gutter and up the roof to stop the force of ice which can be very formidable. In days gone by miners used to use put water in the holes of the rock and wait for it to freeze splitting the rock wide open.
