🧱 Seeing white, chalky stains on your brick?
That's efflorescence! It's salt left behind when water moves through your brick and dries on the surface. It's usually harmless on its own, but it's your wall's way of saying "hey, water's getting in somewhere."
👉 Skip the pressure washer (it can push more water in!). Find the source first, then clean it properly.

❄️ Ever wonder how masonry work keeps going when Calgary temperatures drop?

Mortar needs the right conditions to cure properly. If it freezes too early, it can lose strength and won't bond well to the brick. That's why cold-weather masonry takes extra planning:

🔹 Heated enclosures: tarps and heaters around the work area keep it warm
🔹 Warmed materials: sand and water are heated so the mortar starts warm
🔹 Protected curing: fresh work is covered and insulated after it's laid
🔹 Watching the forecast: we plan each day around temperature and wind

It takes more effort, but it's how we make sure every wall we build lasts for decades, not just until spring. 🧱💪

🍂 Before the first freeze hits Calgary, give your brick and stone a quick check!
Our Chinooks mean dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water that gets into cracks freezes, expands, and slowly pushes your masonry apart. A 10-minute walk-around now can save you a costly repair in spring.

✅ Look for cracked or crumbling mortar joints
✅ Check for loose bricks or stones, especially on steps and chimneys
✅ Clean gutters and downspouts so water drains away from your walls
✅ Make sure soil and landscaping slope away from the foundation
✅ Look for white, chalky stains (efflorescence). They can be a sign of moisture getting in

The clock's ticking on outdoor concrete and masonry work. ⏳🧱

Once overnight temps start dipping toward freezing, timing gets tricky:

❌ Mortar needs time to cure above freezing, or the strength just isn't there.
❌ Concrete poured too close to a freeze can be permanently weakened.
❌ Cold-weather protection (heating, blankets, additives) means extra cost -better to know that now than get surprised later.

If you've got a project on your list, the next few weeks are your window to get it done right.
