Fall is the best time to catch masonry problems before winter makes them worse. 🧱

A few things worth walking your property for before the first freeze:

❌ Hairline cracks in mortar joints — small now, bigger once water gets in and freezes
❌ Gaps around chimney flashing — a common source of hidden water damage
❌ Efflorescence (white staining) — a sign moisture is moving through the wall
❌ Loose or spalling brick faces — needs attention before freeze-thaw cycles start

Catching these in September is a lot cheaper than repairing them in April.

Retaining walls fail quietly — until they don't. 🧱

The biggest mistake we see: treating a retaining wall as decorative when it's actually structural.

A few things that separate a wall that lasts from one that doesn't:

✅ Proper drainage behind the wall — without it, hydrostatic pressure builds and pushes the wall forward over time.
✅ Adequate footing depth — undersized footings shift with Alberta's freeze-thaw cycles.
✅ The right block or stone for load-bearing use — not every product is rated for it.

If your retaining wall is bulging, leaning, or has visible gaps, it's worth a look before it becomes a bigger repair.

How to avoid costly delays when ordering masonry mid-project. 🧱

Running short on material mid-build is avoidable. Here's the checklist:

1️⃣ Calculate with a waste factor — 5-10% minimum. Dye lot matching after the fact is a nightmare.
2️⃣ Confirm availability before finalizing your spec — not after. Some products have 4-6 week lead times.
3️⃣ Order your full quantity at once — partial orders mean multiple deliveries, scheduling headaches, and potential colour variation.
4️⃣ Have a backup product in mind — if your first choice goes out of stock, know what you're switching to before you're in a crisis.
5️⃣ Build your supplier relationship before you need it urgently — the contractors who call us first get the best options.
