🚧 Scaffolding Safety: Work Safe, Work Smart! 🚧

Safety is not just a rule—it's a responsibility. Proper scaffolding practices help prevent falls, injuries, and accidents on construction sites.

✅ Always: • Use inspected and undamaged materials
• Set up scaffolding on firm, level ground
• Check scaffolding before every use
• Use proper access ladders
• Install guardrails, midrails, and toe boards
• Secure scaffolding and follow height limits
• Keep platforms clean and free from debris
• Ensure all workers are trained

❌ Never: • Use damaged materials
• Build on unstable surfaces
• Work without inspection or safety tags
• Climb on scaffold frames or braces
• Remove guardrails or use incomplete platforms
• Overload scaffolding
• Allow untrained personnel to use scaffolding

🦺 Remember: Falls from height can be fatal. Wearing the right PPE—including safety harnesses, helmets, safety shoes, and gloves—can save lives.

💡 Think Safe. Work Safe. Go Home Safe.

The Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act (Chapter 44:02) of Botswana was originally enacted in 1973 and came into force on 1 November 1978. Its most recent amendment was made in 1995 through Act No. 15 of 1995.

It remains a cornerstone of Botswana’s industrial safety legislation, complementing later frameworks such as the Workplace Safety and Health Regulations and the Environmental Assessment Act.

But so many things have changed in the industries governed by this Act.!!!

LIFTING PLAN - TRANSFORMER HANDLING OPERATION

A detailed lifting plan has been prepared for the safe handling and unloading of a 10-ton transformer using a 100-ton XCMG QY100K mobile crane.

The lifting operation will be performed at a working radius of 14.0 meters with the crane configured on fully extended outriggers over level and stable ground conditions. According to the crane load chart, the available lifting capacity at the specified radius is 17.7 tons, which provides an adequate safety margin for the planned load.

The transformer will be lifted using a certified 4-leg chain sling bridle arrangement. All rigging accessories, including the master link, chain slings, shackles, and swivel hook, have been selected in accordance with the required Safe Working Load (SWL) and inspected prior to the operation.

:

Crane Model: XCMG QY100K

Crane Capacity: 100 Ton

Boom Length: 26.0 m

Operating Radius: 14.0 m

Crane Capacity at Radius: 17.7 Ton

Load Weight: 10 Ton Transformer

Lifting Arrangement: 4-Leg Chain Sling Bridle Hitch

Utilization of Crane Capacity: 56.49%

Safety Controls Implemented:

✓Fully extended outriggers deployed

✓Ground stability verified before setup

✓Certified lifting gears utilized

✓Load balancing confirmed before hoisting

✓Controlled lifting to avoid shock loading

✓Dedicated banksman and lifting team assigned

✓Operation conducted under approved lifting plan and risk assessment

The lifting activity shall be executed in compliance with site safety requirements, lifting procedures, and international safe lifting practices to ensure a controlled and incident-free operation.

What is LMRA? (with Example)
✅ Meaning of LMRA

LMRA stands for:
👉 Last Minute Risk Assessment
It is a quick safety check carried out just before starting any task to spot hazards that may have developed or been missed earlier.

LMRA encourages workers to:
✔ Pause and think before starting
✔ Observe the work environment
✔ Identify new or changing risks
✔ Ensure the job can be done safely

📘 Why LMRA Matters
Even when:
✔ A permit to work is approved
✔ A formal risk assessment is completed
✔ A toolbox talk has been conducted
👉 Conditions on site can still change at any time.

LMRA helps detect:
👉 New hazards
👉 Unsafe situations
👉 Missing safety measures
👉 Unexpected risks

📘 What to Check During LMRA
Workers should quickly review:
👉 Is the work area safe?
👉 Is the permit still valid?
👉 Am I wearing proper PPE?
👉 Are tools and equipment in good condition?
👉 Are weather conditions safe?
👉 Are emergency routes clear?
👉 Are there nearby hazards?
👉 Is gas testing done (if required)?

🏗 Example 1
👉 A worker is about to start welding.

Before starting:
✔ He checks the surrounding area
✔ Finds a fuel container nearby
✔ Stops the job
✔ Gets the container removed safely

👉 This action prevents a possible fire.

🏗 Example 2
👉 A crane lifting job is planned.

Before lifting:
✔ The rigger notices strong wind
✔ Reports the unsafe condition
✔ The lift is delayed
👉 LMRA helps avoid a potential accident.

⚠ Key Point
👉 LMRA should always be done by the workers themselves, not just supervisors.

📘 Simple LMRA Questions
Workers should ask:
✔ What could go wrong right now?
✔ What hazards are present?
✔ Are safety controls in place?
✔ Is it safe to continue?

💡 Easy Interview Line
👉 LMRA is a final safety check done just before work to identify and control immediate risks.

Line of Fire Safety: Stay Out of the Danger Zone
⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
Line of Fire hazards occur when a worker is in the path of moving equipment, suspended loads, flying objects, pressure release, or rotating machinery. These hazards can cause serious injuries or even fatalities within seconds. Workers should always identify danger zones, maintain a safe distance, avoid standing under suspended loads, and follow safety procedures. Remember - staying alert and away from the line of fire can save lives.
