We began with a simple mission: to grow the freshest vegetables and herbs for My Farmhouse Kitchens' savoury kitchens, and to build a local value chain that feeds families and empowers farmers. What started as a small nursery quickly became a destination where visitors could see, taste, and take home real food—straight from the garden. By August 2020, we began offering seedlings to home gardeners and commercial growers. A year later, we expanded to four times our original greenhouse capacity and now grow up to 160,000 pesticide-free vegetable, herb, and fruit seedlings—produced in eco-friendly environments with high success rates. We created **The Urban Farmer Learning Centre** to equip new and part-time farmers with practical skills to grow food regeneratively—improving soils, strengthening communities, and restoring climate balance across Southern Botswana.

COMMERCIAL GINGER & TURMERIC PRODUCTION (IN PERSON)

For the professional farmer, entrepreneur and investor, ginger and turmeric offer an opportunity to move into *high-value commercial production* with applications across food, hospitality, manufacturing, health and wellness markets.

The market question matters. *MFK Gardens Centre is currently providing farmers with a space to learn, strengthen their production skills and prepare for larger-scale commercial production—not guaranteeing a buyer.* We encourage farmers to read the programme page carefully, understand the production and market requirements, and join relevant *producer clusters and commodity associations* so they are connected to growers, market information and opportunities as they build their capacity to participate commercially.

The workshop focuses on the practical knowledge required to establish and manage production commercially — from *quality planting material, soil preparation and crop management through to harvesting, post-harvest handling and value addition*.

🫚 CAN BOTSWANA HELP BUILD A REGIONAL GINGER & TURMERIC INDUSTRY?

Every commercial agricultural industry begins with a small number of farmers willing to learn, invest and grow.

If Southern Africa were importing the equivalent of 20,000 tonnes of processed ginger and turmeric products annually, supplying that demand would require approximately 90,000 tonnes of fresh produce.

At an average commercial yield of 20 tonnes per hectare, that translates into:

🌱 About 4,500 hectares of production
👨‍🌾 Around 4,500 commercial one-hectare farmers

The opportunity is therefore not about one farmer supplying the market. It is about building an industry—one that can support growers, seed suppliers, processors, transporters, manufacturers, retailers and exporters across the region.

If Botswana is to participate meaningfully, the work begins with developing knowledgeable commercial farmers who understand production, quality, consistency and enterprise development.

That is the purpose of this workshop.
