Good design starts long before the first stone is laid!

We’re on site at a historic home in Hope Town, taking measurements and documenting the existing conditions for a potential patio and hardscape redesign.

Working with a historic property means understanding what’s already there before deciding what comes next, from grades and dimensions to existing materials, planting and circulation.

The goal is to find opportunities to improve how the space functions while creating a design that feels completely at home with the character of the property.

Not the most glamorous part of landscape architecture, perhaps, but one of the most important. Plus the start of something new is always fun!

This landscape is designed as a sequence rather than a single view: natural stone walls define the route, while palms, tropical foliage and contrasting ground-level planting create layers of height, colour and texture along the way.

The mix of structured hardscape and abundant planting keeps the garden feeling intentional without becoming too formal.

And as the path turns, the planting closes in and opens up again, making even a simple walk through the property feel like a bit of an escape.

Native dune grasses, coastal planting, and a simple fire circle create a gathering space that feels as natural as the shoreline itself.

Sometimes the path is part of the destination. 🌿

A simple boardwalk winds through layers of native and tropical planting, creating a sense of discovery while allowing the landscape to grow naturally around it.

The changing textures, filtered light, and gentle curves make the journey feel just as considered as where it leads.

Good landscape design should make you want to see what’s around the next corner.

A little burst of sunshine growing wild. 🌼 
This bright yellow bloom is a reminder of how much character native and naturally adapted plants can bring to a landscape.

Beyond their colour, flowering groundcovers and low-growing shrubs help build biodiversity, support pollinators and add seasonal moments of interest without making a garden feel overly manicured. 
Sometimes the smallest details make the landscape.

Every project starts with a conversation.

Concept plans are where we explore possibilities, testing layouts, framing important views, positioning outdoor living spaces, and layering planting to create places that feel both beautiful and functional.

It’s less about selecting individual plants and more about understanding how the landscape will be experienced every single day. Every path, tree, terrace, and gathering space has a purpose.  Check out one of our current works in progress.

A pool doesn’t have to be the only focal point.

Here, layers of palms, canopy trees, clipped hedges, and pops of tropical colour help break the space into smaller moments:
framing views, creating shade, and softening the transition between the pool and surrounding architecture.

It’s a great example of how planting can turn a large amenity space into somewhere that feels intimate, comfortable, and
distinctly tropical.

This step shows how early ideas begin to take shape when working with Terrain.

In Step Three, our landscape architects explore initial concepts through sketches and diagrams, testing layout, circulation, and spatial relationships. These early explorations allow creativity and intuition to guide the design before details are finalized.

Great landscapes are rarely defined by a single plant. They come to life through thoughtful combinations.

By layering flowering vines like Bougainvillea with bold tropical foliage, structural palms, and evergreen planting, each species plays a different role. Some provide colour, others create shade, texture, privacy, or movement in the breeze. Together, they create landscapes that feel balanced, immersive, and connected to their surroundings.
