New Project | Arquitectura Yngrid Echalar Gutierrez
Location | Zaragoza, Spain
Our project, Figueruelas Living Origins, is an Urban and Housing Master Plan located in Figueruelas (Zaragoza, Spain). It was conceived to address the challenges of rapid demographic growth through a sustainable, inclusive, and people-centered development model.
The proposal envisions a 50,000 m² pedestrian-oriented, sustainable district featuring 887 affordable housing units distributed across 97 modular residential blocks. Each block is organized around a central spine of façades and vertical hydroponic gardens, framed by triple-height arched porticos that function as climatic shelters and productive urban gardens.
Aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus, the design integrates sustainability, inclusion, and beauty while reinterpreting Mediterranean identity through industrialized construction systems.
Nuestro proyecto, Figueruelas Living Origins, es un Plan Maestro Urbano y de Vivienda ubicado en Figueruelas (Zaragoza, España). Fue concebido para responder a los desafíos del rápido crecimiento demográfico mediante un modelo de desarrollo sostenible, inclusivo y centrado en las personas.
La propuesta plantea un distrito sostenible de 50.000 m², orientado al peatón, que alberga 887 viviendas asequibles distribuidas en 97 bloques residenciales modulares. Cada bloque se organiza en torno a un eje central compuesto por fachadas y jardines hidropónicos verticales, enmarcado por pórticos de triple altura con arcos que funcionan como refugios climáticos y huertos urbanos productivos.
Alineado con los principios de la Nueva Bauhaus Europea, el diseño integra sostenibilidad, inclusión y belleza, al tiempo que reinterpreta la identidad mediterránea mediante sistemas constructivos industrializados.

We are proud to share that the poster for our "Figueruelas: Living Origins" project was selected for the Poster Exhibition at the Innovate4Cities Conference 2026 (I4C26), held at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya.
This recognition encourages us to continue developing urban planning and architectural proposals that promote sustainability, innovation, and a positive impact on our cities.
We are grateful for the opportunity to present our work in this international forum and to contribute to the global conversation on more resilient and sustainable urban futures.

Zaragoza. La arquitecta boliviana Yngrid Echalar ha desarrollado una propuesta que ha buscado dar respuesta al previsible aumento de población en la localidad, donde podrían instalarse más de 2.000 trabajadores en un municipio que apenas supera los 1.200 habitantes.
Muchas Gracias! al equipo periodístico de Cadena SER Radio Zaragoza por la entrevista y publicación del Proyecto Figueruelas Living Origins: La propuesta ha sido registrada como aportación al nuevo Plan Europeo de Vivienda Asequible y ha sido validada dentro de los procesos participativos de la Comisión Europea.
Zaragoza. The Bolivian architect Yngrid Echalar has developed a proposal aimed at addressing the foreseeable population increase in the town, where more than 2,000 workers could settle in a municipality that currently has just over 1,200 inhabitants.

You can now apply with your innovative project to help create more beautiful, sustainable and inclusive neighbourhoods across Europe, including solutions that can help address housing challenges.

In 2026, around €101 million from European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme will support projects across 9 topics in three areas:

🌱 Green transition, social inclusion and local democracy
♻️ Circular and regenerative approaches for the built environment
🏘️ Innovative funding and business models for neighbourhood transformation

Running from 2025 to 2027, the NEB Facility is the first multiannual funding instrument for the New European Bauhaus, supporting sustainable construction, affordable housing and social cohesion through innovation.

Our approach combines research, design, and participation in international platforms and competitions to develop proposals that respond to the social, urban, and environmental transformations shaping the future of cities.

Today, our founding architect, Yngrid Echalar Gutiérrez, participated in the 2nd Multi-Stakeholder hearing on the Elements Paper [virtual] of the United Nations (UN-Habitat), where she had the opportunity to deliver a 2-minute intervention presenting our case study, Figueruelas Living Origins (Zaragoza, Spain).

Our proposal addresses affordable housing in rural areas, strategies to strengthen the resilience of small municipalities, and new territorial planning approaches for a fairer and more inclusive green transition. Through this contribution, we are supporting the conversations that will help shape this important global document.

This session, organized by the Permanent Missions of Poland and Malawi to the UN, brought together international experts and stakeholders to discuss the current challenges facing cities and communities. It is also part of the preparatory process for the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly, which will take place in New York in July 2026, where Member States will review the progress of the New Urban Agenda and adopt a new Political Declaration to advance its implementation.
Hoy, nuestra arquitecta fundadora, Yngrid Echalar Gutiérrez, participó en la 2da Audiencia Multiactor sobre el Documento de Elementos [virtual] de las Naciones Unidas (ONU-Hábitat), donde tuvo la oportunidad de intervenir durante 2 minutos para presentar nuestro caso de estudio Figueruelas Living Origins (Zaragoza, España).

Nuestra propuesta aborda la vivienda asequible en áreas rurales, estrategias para fortalecer la resiliencia de pequeños municipios y nuevos enfoques de planificación territorial para una transición verde más justa e inclusiva. Con ello, contribuimos a las conversaciones que ayudarán a construir este importante documento global.

Esta sesión, organizada por las Misiones Permanentes de Polonia y Malawi ante la ONU, reunió a expertos internacionales y partes interesadas para dialogar sobre los desafíos actuales de las ciudades y comunidades. Además, forma parte del proceso preparatorio para la Reunión de Alto Nivel de la Asamblea General, que se celebrará en Nueva York en julio de 2026, donde los Estados Miembros revisarán los avances de la Nueva Agenda Urbana y adoptarán una nueva Declaración Política para impulsar su implementación.

Es un honor compartir que he sido seleccionada por la Comisión Europea como Experta Externa, tras un proceso altamente competitivo que elige los perfiles del más alto nivel, con sólida pericia y experiencia en los ámbitos de acción y políticas europeas.

La firma de mis primeros Contratos con la Comisión Europea marcó un Hito en mi trayectoria profesional, brindándome la oportunidad de Exportar a Bruselas-Bélgica, mis Servicios de Consultoría Técnica para la Evaluación de Proyectos Europeos que aspiran a recibir financiamiento de la Unión Europea a través de sus múltiples programas que promueven la Investigación y la Innovación.

Como arquitecta y a título personal, me entusiasma y llena de orgullo aportar mi visión y experiencia para contribuir a la regeneración urbana de Europa y asegurar que las futuras intervenciones sean sostenibles, bellas e inclusivas. "
