"Over the past century or so, human-made mass has increased rapidly, doubling approximately every 20 years. The collective mass of these [raw] materials has gone from 3% of the world’s biomass in 1900 to being on par with it today."
This is the real black Friday.
Reducing the rate of production and the use of raw materials are some of the biggest challenges that human’s face today. This graphic illustrates how the total sum of human made mass has surpassed the weight of all global living biomass.
The over consumption of raw materials needs to be addressed and we must continue to find better solutions for how we live and build. After water, concrete is the most used substance in the world, a disturbing statistic when you consider the carbon footprint and ecological impact of concrete.
Prioritising reuse, circular, local and low-impact materials is one way that we can start to break this cycle of over consumption within the building sector (and in fashion too, think twice before you purchase today!).
