Most clients think they can outperform the market. Build more space for less money. Most are wrong.
The Maison Latapie by Lacaton & Vassal is the exception, and not for the reason you've heard. The cheap industrial materials are the visible half of the story. The invisible half: a house designed to expand in summer and contract in winter, where the shutter is not an accessory but the façade itself. You cannot cut from the budget what holds the building up.
This Sunday I'm breaking down the house, the philosophy of "always add," where I think it fails, and why my own practice can't copy it. One of the reasons is the client.
