Mooie gedachte uit 1893 van William Morris, de Engelse Arts and Crafts pionier. Ook het verleden van Koekelare wordt reeds 25 jaar verzameld door de historisch-archeologische kring Spaenhiers. Tijdens openmonumentendag op 13 september brengen we heel wat materiaal uit ons documentatiecentrum naar buiten op 6 verschillende plaatsen in Koekelare (documentatiecentrum Sint-Jorisplein 1a, Huis Proot, Bibliotheek, Lange Max Museum, kerk Zande en Hovaeremolen). Dit gaat van oude documenten, archeologische vondsten, vlaggen, bidprentjes, communieprentjes, affiches, oude schoolkaarten tot verkiezingspamfletten, zaken ivm de twee wereldoorlogen, een 19e eeuwse dokter, stambomen, het toneelleven, de koers, Koekelaarse schrijvers, de milieuvereniging, enz.

Written in the preface to Medieval Lore (1893), Morris’s words capture an idea at the heart of his life and work: that the past is not something simply to preserve or imitate, but something we can learn from and carry forward.
Inspired by the art, craftsmanship and communities of the past, Morris looked to history to imagine a better future; a sentiment that feels just as relevant today and is at the heart of everything we do here at the William Morris Society.
