Just a few days ago the 37th Conference of the European Working Group on Acoustic Emission, took place in beautiful Lyon, France https://ewgae2026.sciencesconf.org/. MEMC (M2S) was present in the program with the innovative topic of Acoustic Emission assisted Active Curing Control of Concrete as well as the scientific committee. The organization was excellent, with rich scientific and social program! We thank the local organizers from INSA Lyon Professors Nathalie Godin, Stephanie Deschanel and Aurelien Doitrand for the hospitality and we are looking forward to the next edition in 2028!

Check out yet another brand-new publication from MEMC(M2S)-VUB in the biggest journal in the civil engineering field, Construction and Building Materials of Elsevier about air-coupled ultrasonic evaluation of self-healing in concrete cracks! The use of different frequencies of surface waves enables the determination of the distribution of the healing products along the depth of the crack! And all this in a non-contact way! Congratulations to Gerlinde and our collaborator Didier from ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles

We are very happy to announce that after the latest release of journal metrics, the journal Developments in the Built Environment of Elsevier, has obtained a top class Impact Factor of 8.7, being even increased compared to last year. This continues to place the journal at the top 5% in the civil engineering, digital construction and related fields! So now you know where to submit your new high-quality paper that you have been writing during the hot hours of summer afternoons… 😊 More information in the link:

Another large conference was dominated by MEMC (or recently M2S group). It was the European Conference on Composite Materials https://www.ntnu.edu/eccm22 organized in Oslo, Norway. Our group was present with no less than 8 researchers presenting work on experimental and numerical investigation of (what else?) advanced composite materials! This huge conference gave the opportunity to showcase our research and enhance our connections to the sustainable composites community. The next edition will be in Porto and some people are already packing suitcases…😉

Even in the heat of the summer research is not hindered in MEMC-VUB - Vrije Universiteit Brussel (M2S)! Please check out our recent study on air-coupled ultrasonic assessment of alkali-silica reaction in cementitious materials! By scanning broad frequency bands, the typical size of voids becomes evident, while ultrasonic mapping reveals the distribution of damage! The study is published in the top rank dedicated journal NDT&E International of Elsevier and you can use the following link to freely download it for the next 50 days! https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1nRMB3RA9SjGa1
We thank our collaborators from UGent! (Doubting any more what to read during sunbathing?)

You still have a chance! Do not miss out! The deadline for abstract submissions for the RILEM Spring Convention in Thessaloniki, Greece, (6-10 April 2027) has been extended until 15/7! You are welcome to consider your submission also in the special session “The role of Non-destructive Testing and Structural Health Monitoring in Life Extension and Sustainability of the Built Environment” (topic 11) coorganized by MEMC (M2S)-VUB, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) and University of Naples Federico II (UNINA). Check out the flyer and the website https://rilemspring2027.civil.auth.gr/topics/ and do not lose time to submit your abstract and arrange your visit to Greece during next spring!

The European Conference on Non-destructive Testing https://www.ecndt2026.org/ took place a few weeks ago in Verona, Italy. As expected, MEMC department had strong presence with Gerlinde and Yasmin while three high-impact presentations and papers related to air-coupled ultrasonic monitoring of concrete fracture and healing as well as concrete curing assessment were celebrated. The conference was very successful, gave opportunity of meeting new (and old friends 😉) on a very beautiful scenery. We are looking forward to the next edition!

Looking a few weeks back, the RILEM Spring Convention took place in neighboring Ghent! Our group had once more a dominant presence with no less than a dozen high quality studies on durability, self-healing, composites for construction and one special session on NDT. We thank the organizers from UGENT, Prof. Nele De Belie and Prof. Geert De Schutter, as well as our colleagues Prof. John Popovics from University of Illinois and Prof. Giuseppe Lacidogna from Politecnico di Torino! Looking forward to the next edition!

The VUB Info Day two weeks ago was an absolute success! 🎉
Dozens of high school students visited the Etterbeek campus and discovered some of the cutting-edge technologies being developed at VUB: robotic exoskeletons, infrared “look-in-the-dark” cameras, innovative bridge engineering, and much more.
Among the highlights was our very own Yasmin, who demonstrated the ultrasonic method used to monitor the self-healing of concrete — a fascinating glimpse into the future of sustainable infrastructure! 👏
A big thank’s to Yasmin for the excellent demonstration. Now we’re expecting a great rise in registrations for next year! 🚀
