MDW ARCHITECTURE

MDW ARCHITECTURE Architectural practice based in Brussels Founded in 2001 by Marie Moignot and Xavier De Wil, MDW Architecture is now strong of 30 staff.

Our ethos is to combine the highest standards of creativity and sustainability. We are committed to offering design excellence to each client, either public or private and independently of the scale of the project. Each request is looked into thoroughly so that the solution reaches beyond the brief. The freshness of our approach has been recognised by several awards. Building on many years of expe

rience in low-energy and passive projects of the highest standards in terms of energy efficiency and sustainable construction, we now integrate these principles in our schemes as naturally as structural engineering. In 2010, MDW’s Savonnerie Heymans complex of 42 accommodations, nursery and several public spaces was awarded the high profile Belgian Award for Energy and Environment in the Eco Building category. We see our relationship with our clients as a partnership, a continuous dialogue where everyone brings something to the other. Our interest in dialogue is also incarnated in the way our projects weave relations with their context and their occupants. We enjoy managing wide and complex projects that require an enriching multi-disciplinarity and where the architect acts as a conductor, whose global vision can guarantee the rightness of the music.

🏠 Relais is now complete — a renewed social housing complex in Ixelles.

After more than four years of work and the continuous efforts of the teams, the 52 social housing units on Rue du Relais in Ixelles have been delivered and inaugurated.

Taking care of the existing structure was at the heart of our approach:
🔹 restoration of the heritage façades of the building, which was designed in the 1920s;
🔹 complete reorganisation of the floor plans to give a double exposure for each flat: more light and private outdoor spaces;
🔹 creation of duplexes in the attic and brick extensions on the garden side while respecting the original architectural spirit;
🔹 redevelopment of the block’s garden into a convivial space that encourages interaction between neighbours

🏛️ MDW joins the Heritage Days 2025 open house programme!

Since 2017, we have been working in an elegant Beaux-Arts style house, the former headquarters of the Smets-Pirson fashion house. Carefully restored, its interior designed by architect Georges France, features a refined Art Deco style close to modernism: abundant light, skylights, glass roofs, marble, geometric ironwork...

🏗️ Renoir is blooming!

Works on the building envelope is nearing completion, with the final touches being made to the terraces and common areas on the ground floor.
Interior finishing work is well underway and exterior landscaping work will begin by the end of the summer.

Located in an exceptional site in the outer suburbs of Brussels — between a historic cemetery wall and a spontaneous vegetable garden forest — the project draws on this semi-wild landscape to create a respectful, collective and sustainable habitat.
🌀 Six simple buildings, 166 dual-aspect social housing units with panoramic views, large balconies, spacious and adaptable lobbies, communal areas and architecture designed to evolve over time. All this has been achieved through a rigorous approach, reconciling significant technical constraints with the SLRB's quest for innovative living standards.

🤝 Special thanks to our project partners, Tractebel & Coseas
🙏 We extend our gratitude to SLRB - BGHM B for their trust and support.

💎 Urban Court, 142 housing units in the heart of Brussels

A fresh perspective on Urban Court, our project for AG Real Estate, thanks to the superb photos by Severin Malaud.
📰 The project is also featured in the latest newsletter of A+ Architecture, in the article “Urban Renaissance” by Amélie Poirel (Article in French and Dutch).

"In reaction to the dense urban morphology, the project aims for a positive densification of the site. The main gesture is to open up the block to its interior communal garden. (...) The address to the city is thus clear and legible with a passage, like a fault, which offers a possible appropriation of the exterior space. This choice positions the project on the fringes of this neighbourhood of introverted blocks."

🏗️ The CBFI visits the RTBF project.
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Cercle Belge des Femmes de l'Immobilier to the site of the future RTBF headquarters. Many thanks to the RTBF for making this visit possible by introducing the project with a joint presentation.

📺 With a surface area of 38,000 m², the building is part of the Mediapark, a changing territory that brings together media, city and landscape. Designed as a contemporary urban palace, it articulates openness, compactness and flexibility, while anticipating changes in working practices.
Through its position at the heart of the future media park, the building engages in an architectural dialogue with the VRT headquarters, materialising a shared vision: a contemporary, open and active media centre, connected to its urban context.

🧲 Terre-Neuve nominated for "Concours Construction Acier" 2024.

The project comprises two volumes:
- A multi-purpose hall housed under a self-supporting sheet steel dome, exploiting the thinness and lightness of the material to cover a space with no intermediate supports.
- A large sports hall, supported by an optimised steel structure, incorporating thermally broken columns in the core, a special feature at the crossroads of energy performance and structural expression...

The design of the structure is inspired by Henri Labrouste's Sainte-Geneviève library, where the metal structure becomes both support and ornament, technical rigour and architectural expression.

played a key role in the development and success of the project. 🙏
Thank you to Infosteel for this nomination and well done to ! 👑

Terre-Neuve - Uses and users of a place 🤸‍♂

Terre-Neuve sports hall fits into a dense and complex urban fabric. Conceived as a space that can be appropriable and welcoming, it reflects our desire to design an inhabited architecture, a setting capable of adapting to the practices, rhythms and stories of those who use it.
Anouk Maupu's photographic work, produced over several months, reveals this essential dimension. Through a sensitive series, she documents the way in which different clubs - Gym Tonic, ABC Champions, Youth Club, etc. - use the space on a daily basis.
Her work shows us what is important to us: architecture that does not impose itself, but offers itself to use.

These five images are just an extract from the complete series, which is an accurate reflection of what a place becomes when it is fully experienced.
