OFFICE FOR URBANITY (of kortweg OFFICEU) is een geëngageerd Brussels ontwerpbureau voor stedelijke architectuur. Onze architectuur is de ruimtelijke expressie van een intelligente stedelijkheid. Deze stedelijkheid houdt een sterk bewustzijn van de alomvattende context in: mens, milieu, maatschappij, economie, beschikbare ruimte, techniek, materialen, grondstoffen en tijd. Intelligente stedelijkheid staat voor een onderbouwde, verantwoorde, doordachte, onbevooroordeelde en toekomstgerichte omgang met deze context, wars van dogma’s en mode.

A conventional house extension becomes a garden pavilion, with kitchen that feels almost outdoors. A delicate steel structure blurs the boundaries between inside and outside, allowing the architecture and garden to gradually merge.

Everybody needs good neighbours, especially when renovating!

In project 60CAM, some very nice neighbours helped make the transformation possible. Six-metre-long beams were installed through the shared wall, from their garden.

This structural intervention transformed what was once a conventional rear extension into a generous, light-filled space centred around an open kitchen, seamlessly connected to the garden.

The characteristic roofscape of SPEL in Sint-Amands.

A timber structure of slender columns and repeated shed roofs gives the building its distinct character, allowing for generous spans with an efficient and lightweight construction.

Integrated rooflights bring daylight deep into the sports hall while also supporting natural ventilation and night cooling.

The rhythm of the roofs breaks down the scale of the large volume, helping the building settle naturally into its surroundings.

Today, we welcomed the ecobuild.brussels to RUIS - the transformation of the Jan Ruusbroec Church in Ruisbroek.

We presented the project to architects, contractors and other professionals from the building sector, sharing our approach to the reuse and transformation of the existing church.

The project aims to turn the church and its surroundings into a new public meeting place for the community. By opening up the building and activating its corners, the church becomes more permeable and the existing north–south division of the square disappears, allowing the entire public space to be experienced as one.

Inside, the church is reorganised around three complementary functions: a polyvalent space in the nave, a smaller church in the choir, and a brasserie opening onto the square. New interventions are kept focused and reversible, allowing the building to adapt to future needs and uses.

Rather than replacing what is there, RUIS builds on the qualities of the existing building - giving a new role to a familiar place while keeping its spatial character and identity at the heart of the project.

First days back at school! ✌️

SPEL in Sint-Amands is a flexible, multifunctional building combining sports hall and after-school childcare, with an adjoining playground and park framed by a multifunctional canopy.

All spaces are open to the wider neighbourhood, extending their use beyond school hours.

Our multifunctional petanque luifelt in Puurs-Sint-Amands was recently completed. 🦚

A small intervention for the local community of petanque players (and their animals) now - that temperatures are back to normal - is ready for its everyday users again.

A 12 × 12 m roof resting on just four slender columns. Placed at the centre of the square, it provides shelter while keeping the space open and connected in all directions. Rainwater is guided through the columns directly into the adjacent wadi, integrating the structure into the surrounding landscape.

SANTA — OFFICIALLY RESTARTED!

We’ve officially restarted working on the project SANTA — renovation and extension of the St. Anthony Abbot Church in Muide-Meulestede in Ghent. It will soon become a cultural centre in one of Ghent’s most dynamically evolving neighbourhoods!

The project preserves the existing church while introducing the facilities needed for the new use. Additional side naves create a soft transition between park and building, forming new spaces and opening the church towards its surroundings.
