ECFA - European Children's Film Association ECFA is the organisation for all, who are interested in high quality films for children and young people.

ECFA is the organisation for all, who are interested in high quality films for children and young people: film makers, producers, promotors, distributors, exhibitors, TV-programmers, festival organizers and film educators. Audiovisual media in general and cinema in specific are a vehicle for artistic communication and for cultural transmission. Now that the world is becoming a "global village", children and young people have more and more access to culture and those who use the cinematic media are more numerous than we can imagine. The aim of ECFA is to bring the children in contact with the great machine called cinema. ECFA offers a communication panel promoting new ways of co-operation within Europe in the fields of production, festivals, distribution, exhibition and film education. "We want to create a positive attitude towards European films for children - also in its economic and political aspects." At the moment ECFA has more than 150 members, mostly companies and organisations, coming from 40 different countries. ECFA is convinced that European films for children and young people could not only succeed, but could also find a profitable audience. Children and young people are not only the future of our society, but also an important part of it here and now, with enormous emotional, cultural and of course material needs. Since its foundation in 1988 ECFA has organized meetings and events to promote and stimulate the development of European films for children and young people.

📣 Children’s cultural rights need more than words. They need support.

ECFA and Kids Regio have joined forces to call on European leaders to protect funding for AgoraEU, the proposed EU programme for 2028–2034.

The proposed 30% budget reduction could put at risk the festivals, film education initiatives, independent organisations and European collaborations that help children discover a diversity of films and stories.

Our open letter calls for sustained investment in children’s cinema, film education and the organisations making European audiovisual culture accessible to young audiences.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to experience cinema and take part in cultural life.

Children’s access to film and audiovisual creation needs more than good intentions. It needs sustained support for the professionals and organisations making it possible.

At FFLASH in Barcelona on 16 September, ECFA President Pantelis Panteloglou joined Giuliana Valentini from Cineteca di Bologna, in a discussion moderated by Clàudia Aragon from NADIR.

Together, they explored audiovisual media as a cultural right for children and young people — and the role of programming, education and creative participation in making this right a reality.

How can we make audiovisual culture more accessible to children and encourage them to engage with cinema in their own way?

ECFA Member spotlight :

MOUV’ is going on the road! 🌍🎬

After four years of developing MOUV’ in Brussels, the project by Jolifanto is taking a new step — and we are happy to see it travel as part of the ECFA network.

From August 2026 to summer 2027, MOUV’ On The Road will travel across the world, exploring how cinema can create spaces for encounter, participation and community.

The journey will include projects in Georgia, Vietnam, French Polynesia and Brazil, as well as research and encounters in other countries.

The approach is simple: listen, meet, co-create and connect.

Rather than bringing a ready-made model, each project will be developed together with local partners and communities.

The journey also includes a research dimension, looking at the social role of local cinemas and how neighbourhood cinema can be reinvented.

🎬 MOUV’ has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its activities, starting with the first project in Georgia, and to fairly compensate the local volunteers involved.

60% of the goal has already been reached — but there is still a way to go.

You can help by supporting the campaign, sharing the project or connecting the MOUV’ team with people and organisations who may be interested.

Every contribution counts. Every connection can help the project go further.

Although the summer months are regarded as the low season in the children's film year, there are festivals that go on.
And ... they also present ECFA awards.
At the CACTUS festival in Aosta it was the movie THE LEGEND OF THE HUMMINGBIRD by Morgan Devos (F) that received the ECFA Short Film Award and at the GIFFONI film festival it was MIRA by Marie Limkilde (DK) that went home with the ECFA award for best feature film in competition.

Congratulations to both!

🎬 Film education in action: A scuola di cinema / Cinema at School

ECFA is proud to be a partner of Cineteca di Bologna in its inspiring film education work, and to collaborate with Cineteca also through our biannual Workshop Warehouse event.

This June, Cineteca di Bologna wrapped up the 2025/2026 edition of A scuola di cinema – Cinema at School, one of the flagship programmes of its educational department Schermi e Lavagne.

The scale and depth of the project are remarkable:

👩‍🏫 500 teachers involved
🎒 4,900 students reached
🏫 90 school complexes across 7 Italian regions
🎥 120 screenings in cinemas and schools
🛠️ More than 1,000 hours of workshops

Through teacher training, screenings, hands-on workshops, online educational resources, film analysis, and creative activities, the programme helps children and young people discover cinema not only as an art form, but also as a language for learning, expression and participation.

For ECFA, initiatives like Cinema at School show exactly why European cooperation in film education matters: sharing knowledge, building networks, and supporting meaningful encounters between children, teachers, educators and cinema.

Congratulations to Cineteca di Bologna, Schermi e Lavagne, and all the teachers, students and partners involved!

Open Call: Workshop Organisers for Workshop Warehouse 2027

Are you developing creative, hands-on approaches to film education for children and young audiences?

ECFA invites educators, filmmakers, artists, cultural professionals, organisations and collectives to submit workshop proposals for Workshop Warehouse 2027, organised in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna and the European Children’s Film Festival Network Screen the Future, alongside Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna.

We are looking for practical, participatory workshops connected to film education, filmmaking, animation, storytelling, media literacy, archival practices, interdisciplinary arts, technology, cultural heritage and other related fields.

Workshop Warehouse is not a conference format. It is a space for shared practice, experimentation and exchange — where participants learn by doing, creating, discussing and collaborating.

Deadline for proposals: 10 July 2026

Submit your proposal through the official form:
