Before we built the first sauna, we needed a name.

Ihka. An archaic Finnish word meaning “your own.” Not in the sense of owning a thing, but in the deeper sense. The thing that belongs to you because you live with it, return to it, remember it.

A sauna becomes yours over years. The way your family arranges the bench. The towel that always hangs on the same hook. The particular sound of the door closing on a cold winter night.

Every iHKA leaves the same workshop in Masku, on the southwest coast of Finland. The same hands shape every panel. The same eyes check every joint before it goes on the truck.

From there, it travels. A garden, a lakeside, a forest clearing. Authentic Finnish sauna culture, delivered intact to homes across Europe.

Thirty minutes in the heat. One cold-shower break.

This spring, researchers at the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Turku ran what is, more or less, an ordinary Saturday evening in Finland. 51 middle-aged adults. Immune cells measured before, during, and after.

The white blood cells rose during the session and returned to baseline within half an hour. Mobilised from their storage sites to patrol the body, then redeposited. A patrol, not a chemical alarm.

The team is careful about what this means. So are we. One session, immediate effects, no long-term conclusions.

But the protocol they tested, heat then cool then heat, is the same pattern UNESCO recognised in 2020. The tradition has its own quiet evidence.

Two heaters. Two rituals. One sauna

A. Mini IKI. Wood-fired. ~12 kW. 100 kg of stones. Ready in forty-five. Birch or pine. For the
ceremony, the crackle, the waiting, the earned heat. Slow heat asks something of you, and
gives more back.

B. Harvia Cilindro PC90. Electric. 8 kW. 90 kg of stones. Ready in twenty minutes, by app or
remote. For the everyday ritual: quiet, clean, on demand. Daily loyly with nothing in the way.

120 mm of Finnish winter, layer by layer. Spruce on the outside. Reflective foil to hold the
warmth. 120 mm of mineral wool to hold the loyly. Spruce batten for the bones. Premium spruce
inside, hand finished.
