New EU packaging rules are here, and they're not just for packaging manufacturers. 📦

Since August 2026, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies, with more obligations coming in 2027 and 2030. For food and beverage founders, that means new questions to answer: Can you prove your packaging complies, or are you relying on your supplier's word? And is the packaging you're designing today still allowed in a few years?

We sat down with Charles Claeys and Sarah Bos of Monard Law to find out what startups really need to know, because choosing the right packaging today is a lot cheaper than redesigning it tomorrow.

At Start it , we work with startups across every field imaginable. For our latest Team Day, we traded the office for a very real one. 🌱

We spent the day in the fields at (on)kruid, an organic farm in Lievegem that grows herbs and turns them into teas and other natural drinks. Seeing first-hand how a startup from our 2024 cohort has grown was the perfect way to recharge as a team.

A big thank you to the on-kruid team for opening up their farm to us, and to Compliments of Nature for the delicious flavours that kept us going throughout the day!

The numbers reveal interesting insights on what and where startups are building. With a record breaking 613 applications and an increase of 48% with last year.

Here is how the numbers break down across our ecosystem:

𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨?
- Brussels takes the lead with 183 applications.
- Antwerp stays red-hot with 137.
- Ghent brings heavy momentum with 121.
- Leuven (62), Kortrijk (27), Hasselt (26), Louvain-la-Neuve (26), Liège (21), and Charleroi (10) demonstrate that innovation & entrepreneurship are found throughout Belgium.
In the Walloon area, we notice a growth of 12% year over year.

𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳?
- B2B dominates the room with 472 teams (over 77% solving core enterprise pain points).
- B2C steps up with 141 ambitious consumer teams.
