Internationally acclaimed American architect and educator Marlon Blackwell visited Dhaka from June 27–30 as part of the Next50 initiative. During his stay, he visited the Zebun Nessa Mosque by Ar. Saiqa Iqbal Meghna, the National Parliament Building, Boro Sardar Bari in Sonargaon, and the BRAC University campus.
The visit culminated in an inspiring seminar on June 29 at Hotel Radisson Blu, where Blackwell reflected on over three decades of his architectural practice. A thought-provoking panel discussion followed, chaired by Professor Fuad H. Mallick and featuring leading voices from Bangladesh’s architectural community. Also present were Dr. Tanzil Shafique from Next50 and Mr. Naushad Chowdhury, Brand Director of Abul Khair Group. The event was supported by Shah Cement.

Elemental Imprints: The Jute Made Pavilion – is a design competition and research-based lab inviting architecture students and recent graduates to explore innovative architectural possibilities using jute as a sustainable material. The initiative is being organized by the Dhaka Lab in collaboration with Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and BRAC University.
The lab will be guided by architect Marina Tabassum and scientist Dr. Mubarak Ahmed Khan. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to further develop and build their pavilion proposal, participate in the Bio Design Lab South Asia exhibition in New Delhi in 2027, and lead an international workshop at Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi alongside participants from Goethe-Instituts across South Asia.
