PHC Pile stands for Pretensioned Spun High-strength Concrete

Where it's used: PHC piles are common in foundation work for bridges, high-rise buildings, ports, and industrial structures, especially in regions like China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, because they're strong, durable, resistant to corrosion, and cheaper to produce in bulk than solid concrete piles (since they're holdriving
When driving PHC piles, several tests/checks are needed before, during, and after driving to ensure quality and load-bearing capacity:

Before driving:

Concrete cube/cylinder strength test – verify pile meets design strength (usually C60–C80).
Visual & dimensional inspection – check for cracks, spalling, straightness, and correct diameter/length.
Welding inspection – if piles are spliced, check weld quality at joints (visual + sometimes ultrasonic/dye penetrant testing).

During driving

Driving record / blow count monitoring – track hammer blows per 25cm or 30cm pe*******on (used to estimate bearing capacity via dynamic formulas like Hiley or Engineering News formula).
Verticality/alignment check – using level or inclinometer to ensure the pile stays plumb.
Set measurement (final set) – pe*******on per blow near end of driving, used to confirm the pile has reached required bearing capacity.
Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) test / High Strain Dynamic Test – measures stress, energy, and estimates capacity in real time; also detects pile damage during driving.

After driving
Re-strike test – pile is hit again after a rest period (allows soil "setup"/relaxation to be accounted for) to confirm capacity.
Pile Integrity Test (PIT) / Low Strain Test – checks for cracks, breaks, or defects along the pile shaft using sonic/echo methods.
Static Load Test – the most reliable test; applies actual load (often via kentledge or anchor piles) to verify the pile can safely carry design load (usually 2x working load).
Dynamic Load Test – an alternative/supplement to static load test, faster and cheaper, correlates stress-wave data to capacity.
