Sunken Slab or Uniform Slab?
Which Is Better for Your Bathroom?

A sunken slab has traditionally been used to hide bathroom drainage pipes and maintain a clean ceiling below. But when we look beyond appearance, maintenance and long-term performance matter just as much.

A well-planned uniform slab with a dedicated plumbing shaft/duct can provide:

Easier access to plumbing
Simpler leak detection and repair
Less concealed pipework
Simpler construction
Better long-term maintainability

A sunken slab isn't necessarily wrong. It simply comes with maintenance considerations that need to be addressed during design.

💧 WATERPROOFING: THE DETAILS THAT KEEP A BUILDING DRY

Waterproofing is not simply about applying a chemical to a wall or floor. The real protection comes from proper detailing at joints, corners, pipe pe*******ons, floor drains, and changes in level.

At LN Architects, we believe waterproofing should be treated as a complete construction system—not as an afterthought.

Here are the key construction details illustrated in this guide:

1. Wall–Floor Junction
The most vulnerable point where the floor meets the wall. The waterproofing layer should continue seamlessly from the floor up the wall, with a minimum 150 mm upturn in wet areas. This helps prevent water from migrating behind the wall finish.

2. Internal Corner Detail
Sharp 90° corners can become weak points in waterproofing. A rounded cementitious fillet (minimum 75 mm radius) is shown at the wall-floor corner before applying the waterproofing membrane. This reduces stress concentration and helps create continuous coverage.

3. Pipe Pe*******on
Water frequently finds its way through gaps around plumbing pipes. The detail shows waterproofing carried around the pe*******on, with polymer-modified grout/sealant used to properly seal the interface. Pipe pe*******ons should never simply be left as holes through the waterproofing layer.

4. Floor Drain Detail
The drain is one of the most critical points in a bathroom. The waterproofing layer must properly connect to the drain assembly so that water cannot travel underneath the screed or toward the slab. Proper slope toward the drain is equally important.

Different areas of a building face different levels of water exposure, so one waterproofing solution does not fit every location.

From bathroom wet walls and floors to kitchens, balconies, exterior walls, and rooftops — the right product, application stage, and layer sequence all matter.

Colours That Don’t Take Away My Sanity — EP. 15 💚

Sometimes, luxury is all about balance.

Deep walnut. Forest-green marble. Antique brass. Warm stone. Soft, controlled lighting.

The specialty of this interior is the layering of rich materials within a very restrained colour palette. The green marble becomes the statement, while the walnut creates depth, the brass adds warmth, and the rounded mirrors soften the geometry.

And then there’s that subtle glow beneath the vanity—just enough light to make the stone feel almost sculptural.

Nothing feels excessive.
Nothing feels out of place.

Rich materials. Warm light. Quiet drama.

Because a space doesn't need more colours to feel luxurious.

Some interiors are beautiful because of what they add.
This one is beautiful because of how carefully everything works together.

Dark wood, warm stone, woven textures and soft amber lighting create a space that feels almost like a private retreat.

But the real specialty here is the layering of textures.

The woven wall panels bring softness.
The raw-edge stone vanity adds a touch of nature.

Foundation Design: The Decision Begins Below Ground

In soft or highly compressible soils, foundation selection is not simply a matter of choosing between shallow and deep foundations.

The key considerations are soil bearing capacity, compressibility, settlement potential, structural load, groundwater conditions, and the depth of competent bearing strata.

Where shallow foundations cannot adequately control bearing pressure or differential settlement, a properly designed deep foundation system—such as reinforced-concrete piles—may be required to transfer loads to deeper, more competent soil layers or rock.

A safe foundation is not defined by depth alone.
It is defined by engineering judgment, geotechnical investigation, structural analysis, and proper ex*****on.

The strength of a building begins with the ground beneath it.

July 2026 → August 2026 🏗️

Site Visit | Majar Road, Mirpur
A month of progress at our site.

July marked the structural framework and preparation for masonry. By August, the spaces began to take shape with brick walls, openings, and clearly defined rooms.

A few construction essentials to remember:
• Use quality, tested materials.
• Proper curing is crucial for concrete strength.
• Regular site supervision helps maintain quality.
• Good planning today builds better spaces tomorrow.

Site Visit | Majar Road, Mirpur

A site visit today for one of our ongoing projects at Majar Road, Mirpur.

The electrical layout marking was underway, and I had to guide the team through the drawings and identify the required electrical points, sockets, and switches on site.

This is a common reality of construction in Bangladesh. Despite having years of practical experience, many skilled workers still require direct guidance to interpret technical drawings correctly. As architects, we often have to coordinate closely with electrical, plumbing, masonry, tile, carpentry, and interior teams to ensure the design is executed as intended.

It can be demanding, but seeing the drawings gradually transform into a real space makes it worthwhile.

Grateful to be part of every stage of the process.

Architecture doesn't end when the drawing is finished. The real work continues on site. 🧱📐
