PEOPLES CUITURE PHOTO EXPEDITIONS around Chittagong – Bandarban hill tracts and Cox’s Bazar
The cultural landscape of Chittagong, the Bandarban Hill Tracts, and Cox’s Bazar reveals a deeply human story—where tradition, labor, and identity are woven into everyday life.

In Chittagong, Bangladesh’s vibrant port city, culture is shaped by industry and resilience. Along the coast, shipbreaking yards and salt fields define a way of life passed down through generations. Workers dismantle massive vessels by hand, a physically demanding craft that reflects endurance and survival. Nearby, salt farmers harvest crystallized white fields under the blazing sun, while fishermen unload their daily catch at bustling ghats. This is a place where modern commerce meets age-old labor traditions, creating a raw, authentic cultural experience.

Moving inland to the Bandarban Hill Tracts, the atmosphere shifts into a world of indigenous heritage and natural harmony. Ethnic communities such as the Marma people, Chakma people, and Mro people live in close connection with the land. Their bamboo houses perch on hillsides, surrounded by jhum cultivation fields. Traditional weaving, spiritual rituals, and vibrant festivals express a culture that values simplicity, community, and respect for nature. Life here moves slowly, guided by seasons and ancestral wisdom.

At the coast of Bay, Cox’s Bazar – the sacred landscape where the hills meet the sea offers a striking contrast. This vast drying ground is one of the largest hubs for traditional fish processing in Bangladesh. Rows upon rows of fish are sun-dried by hand, filling the air with a strong, unmistakable scent. Families work together—sorting, salting, and preserving fish using techniques unchanged for decades. The scene is intense, yet deeply cultural, representing a livelihood that supports thousands and connects the sea to inland communities.

Together, these regions form a powerful narrative of south-east Bangladesh’s diversity—industrial grit in Chittagong, indigenous harmony in Bandarban, and coastal survival at Nazirar Tek. For travelers and photographers, this journey is not just about places, but about people—their hands, their traditions, and their enduring spirit.
