Home away from home…… holds a special place in our hearts.

We have just spent many hours the past few days walking the surrounding gardens of Beulah with Henry watching the birds (and chasing the birds), admiring the historic Georgian architecture, enjoying a few sparkling wines from our favourite wineries, whilst breathing in the crisp tassie air. It feels like a mid year reset!

The interiors are full of moments in every room. It’s warm, welcoming and feels lived in. has worked her magic throughout ensuring a collection of beautiful individual pieces to feel like you are living in a bygone era.

Kudos to Bec and David who have done an incredible job in bringing Beulah back to her former glory. It was an honor to play our small part in the project and we feel privileged to spend family time in such a special place in the world.

We just became Passive house Certified!(Tradesman)

Passive House - often referred to as the “gold standard” in sustainable architecture due to its focus on comfort, efficiency and the overall well-being of occupants through improved indoor air quality and moisture management.

After going to down a rabbit hole 18 months ago researching building science, I came across a realization that as a licensed builder I knew so little about how a building functions as a wholistic system and the interplay of its components with the surrounding environment. None of this is taught to carpenters or builders in NSW.

I realised I had to be better!! Clients are entrusting us to build and renovate their homes to the highest possible standard. Building homes to the Australian building code is, frighteningly, the worst legally built home we can build.

Once I gained an understanding around this, driving past so called ‘luxury built’ homes in progress (I assume because it has natural stone, led lighting, Mediterranean vibes 🤷🏼‍♂️?) with windows installed in bare timber frames uncovered for weeks exposed to the weather with foil sarking flapping in the breeze, with no regard to Building durability and occupant health. The industry has a long way to go to be building better!!

So that’s why I decided to become passive house certified, because I want to ensure that we are building with the gold standard principles for every one of our clients.

One of our most loved features in old homes is their ornate details and rich character, like this stunning fireplace in the dining room of our Parsley Bay project.

When designing for these kinds of projects, it’s so important to pay respect to these older, timeless elements of the home whilst making the room fresh and relevant for how a client will use the space in today’s modern world.

A central part of our ethos here at Yarrow Build is ensuring we are committed to making sustainably-conscious choices at every stage of our projects.

Whist we are advocates for preserving and restoring existing bones of a home where possible, sometimes building a new home designed with passive house principles at the forefront is more appropriate for the site.

When demolishing for renovations or a rebuild it’s worth considering, where and what materials can be salvaged and reused.

Can you believe that the average Australian NEW home build generates over 200tonne embodied carbon at Handover….which actually means there is more CO2 emissions generated than the weight of the home itself!

On the 1950’s cottage renovation (pictured), we made as many purposeful decisions around reusing bricks, roof tiles, timber, recycled hardwoods as well as local sourcing of materials.
Every little bit just makes sense!

This project marks a new chapter for the future direction for our team.

✔️Yes, this will be an end to end project from interior design to Build.
✔️ Yes, this home will have beautifully created interiors from
✔️ Yes, we will be using many Australian made products and local suppliers.

However, the brief and fundamental reason for this new home is to build a high performing, healthy and durable home for the family who will call this space their home.

Unfortunately building a new house to the current building code in Australia does little to nothing to address and avoid mould in our homes. I have spent the best part of the last year researching and learning from some amazing people.
Even yesterday we spent the day at further developing our skills.

As demo started today, we can’t wait for this project to take shape over the coming year!
