The bees find this one before the plant’s even in the ground.

Grevillea sericea is about as tough as a Sydney native gets. Sandstone soil, full sun, coastal wind, it takes all of it and flowers close to year round, which is why the bees and honeyeaters never really leave it alone. It’ll sit happily around two metres, or stay tighter with a light prune after the main flush.

That shady strip in your garden finally has a plant made for it.

Hosta earns its place on foliage alone, and the variegated forms hold interest far longer than most shade loving plants. They edge a path cleanly, sit happily under deciduous trees and cope with the low light most Sydney side gardens experience.

But a word of warning: Slugs and snails treat them as a personal invitation.

This backyard has it all. Formal lawn, new pool with glass fencing, new pergola, and a tennis court.

The lawn is the main event. It runs flat and open through the middle, and the glass fencing keeps the pool part of the same space rather than a separate zone. Pergola sits alongside for shade and outdoor casual seating servicing the tennis court.

A firepit that feels like it grew there instead of being dropped in.

This one sits tucked away in a garden bed on Sydney's lower north shore, surrounded rather than sidelined. The log seating is cut from solid timber, low and unfussy, and lets the gingers and palms do the framing. Get the planting right around a piece like this and the space overall reads as part of the garden.

Nursery days are one of the better parts of our job. Three advanced Olives are headed for a project where they’ll sit in a bed of Pennisetum planted en masse, with a fire pit in the centre. Each tree gets walked around a few times before it gets chosen for a project and goes on the truck, because one that looks great lined up in a row can sit completely wrong in a garden.

This little plant has taken on the hardest job along this path.

Euphorbia hypericifolia 'Diamond Frost' spills over the natural stone pavers at our Paddington courtyard project until the hard boundary between garden and paving softens into something looser. Those tiny white flowers keep coming for months, and the plant barely asks for anything. It's a small detail, but it changes how the whole space feels.

Every "wild" looking garden you love was most likely planned within an inch of its life.

Naturalistic garden design takes more thought than a simple hedge and a lawn. Grasses that move and layers that bring in birds and bees are worked out long before anything goes into the ground. The best of these gardens don't peak on day one, they get better with age. Effortless is the illusion.

It softens a rendered wall without fighting the architecture, holds a clean line with minimal maintenance and still gives you that flush of white flowers each season. The difference between a good and great landscape is in the detail.

Inspired Exteriors wasn’t started to make gardens look good for a photo. Most outdoor spaces get designed after the house is finished, an add-on rather than part of the plan. We do it the other way. Landscape and architecture get designed together, from the start, because that’s the only way a property actually makes sense as a whole.
