Last week, Safety Week 2026 ran across Colas sites around the country and across the world.

This year's theme was preparation with conversations and toolbox talks happening on site, over team breakfasts, BBQ lunches, and morning pre-starts, all centred on the same question: how do we use preparation to ensure safe jobs and worksites?

The message from leadership was clear: every person has the right and the responsibility to stop work and take 5 if something felt wrong, unsafe, or unclear, or if scope had changed. Whether that's 5 seconds to reassess, 5 minutes to regroup, or 5 hours while a scope change gets resolved, stopping is always the right call.

Those conversations weren't just in the toolbox talk. Leadership were out with crews across the group all week.

Women have been engineering the way we move for generations.

23 June is International Women in Engineering Day. This year's theme is Engineering Intelligence, and we're marking it by recognising three women whose work shaped the roads, signage standards, and rail networks we rely on every day, including right here in Australia.

๐Ÿš— Did you know that road rules in Australia can vary depending on where you are?

While there is a national baseline, the rules that apply in Queensland are not always identical to those in Western Australia, New South Wales, or South Australia.

Here are a few areas where rules can differ:
๐ŸŸก Mobile phone and hands-free requirements
๐ŸŸก Speed limits in school zones and roadwork zones
๐ŸŸก Minimum distance when overtaking a cyclist
๐ŸŸก U-turn rules at intersections and traffic lights
๐ŸŸก Trailer and load requirements for light vehicles

Not sure of the rules for where you are or where you're travelling to? Check out the state roads authories for a quick refresher.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธKnow the rules and drive safe this National Road Safety Week.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ This week is National Road Safety Week.

We spend every day building and maintaining the roads Australians rely on. Road safety matters deeply to us and our communities.

In 2025, more than 1,300 Australians were killed and 40,000 seriously injured on our roads. Phones, passengers, fatigue, a moment of inattention. That's all it takes for someone's life to be permanently changed or not make it home.

Together we can change these numbers. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and pledge to Drive So Others Survive. ๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธ https://roadsafetyweek.com.au/home/ /pledge
