Meet George Kamitsis, Company Director and Building Consultant here at Habitat NT. 🔨

George is Darwin born and bred, and he’s been building in the Territory since 1984. He started on the tools as a carpenter and worked his way up to leading hand and foreman, helping deliver everything from government housing in Darwin, Palmerston and Katherine to Horizons, a 14 storey apartment tower in the city.

George and Paul founded Habitat in 2007, the same year his work took out HIA NT Best Display Home. Along the way he’s also picked up an Australian Architect Award and restored one of Darwin’s heritage listed homes.

Four decades of building up here means George knows what works in the Territory, and what doesn’t. It’s why he still keeps a close eye on every Habitat build, making sure each one is done properly from slab to handover.

Handover day for James and Monica 🔑

There’s a moment in every handover where the family walks into their new home and just stops. That’s when it stops being a set of plans and starts being the place where the school lunches get made, the birthday cakes get iced, and everyone somehow ends up leaning on the kitchen bench.

This one’s a little bit special. It’s James and Monica’s first home, and they built it from scratch! A first home usually means taking on someone else’s layout or someone else’s list of jobs to fix. These two got to choose theirs instead, right down to the kitchen they were standing in.

Congratulations James and Monica. Enjoy every minute of it. 🙌🏽

It offers $30,000 towards buying or building a new home, and unlike most grants, it’s not just for first home buyers. If you’ve owned property before, you can still apply, as long as you sign your contract by 30 September 2027.
