Every January we get the same phone call. "It was fine last summer."

It usually wasn't. The signs were there, they just weren't bad enough to do anything about in October.

Here's what to watch for. It takes forever to cool the room, or never quite gets there on the really hot days. It's noisier than it used to be, or making a noise it didn't make last year. It's needed more than one repair in the last couple of years. And it's icing up, dripping, or cutting out on the hottest afternoons.

One of those on its own might just mean a service. Two or three together usually means the system is near the end, and you're much better off deciding that now than in the middle of a heatwave with a three week wait.

Either way we'd rather tell you it's got another summer in it than sell you something you don't need.

What an awesome review!

These two young men are an asset to your company. Very happy with the result.

Eleanor had us out for abattery and solar install. [One real detail, like how long it had been plus some minor electircal work.

Nothing glamorous. Just the stuff that makes a house easier to live in, done properly and cleaned up afterwards.

That's most of what we do, honestly. The big jobs get the photos, but this is the day to day 🙌

This is what an install day actually looks like.

Wall unit up, pipework run and tidied, outdoor unit in, tested, and the room cooling by the afternoon. Most split system installs are done in a day and we clean up after ourselves like we were never there.

The reason we're posting it now rather than in January is simple. Right now there are install dates available and you get to pick one that suits you. Once the first 38 degree day lands, the phone doesn't stop and everyone is waiting weeks.

If there's a room in your house that nobody can sit in from December to March, this is the easy time to deal with it.

School's back. The house is quiet again. And that list you've been meaning to get to is still sitting there.

You know the one. The powerpoint hanging off the wall since the kids were little. The light in the hallway nobody can reach. The fan that's never worked properly. The outdoor light that's been dead for two years.

None of them are urgent, which is exactly why they never get done.

Here's the thing about those jobs though. They're quicker and cheaper done together. One visit, one lot of travel, one morning, and the whole list is gone.

Daylight saving has done its thing and suddenly the backyard is usable again until 8pm.

Which is around the time most people realise the outdoor setup isn't quite there. One sad light over the back door. An extension lead running out the laundry window to the fridge in the shed. Nowhere to plug anything in near the table.

None of that is a big job. Outdoor powerpoints with proper weather covers, lighting around the alfresco, a dedicated circuit out to the shed. Usually a few hours, and you get the whole summer out of it.

If you're planning on living out there for the next six months, now's the time to sort it, before Christmas gets close and everyone wants it done at once.

Most people never think about their switchboard until something goes wrong. So here are the signs worth noticing before it gets to that.

A burning smell, or brown marks around the board. Buzzing or crackling. Lights that dim every time the aircon or oven kicks in. Power that keeps cutting out for no obvious reason.

Any of those and the board is telling you something. It doesn't mean the house is about to fall over, but it does mean it needs someone qualified to look at it.

If you notice one, don't touch it and don't try to fix it yourself. That's our job, and it's usually a quick find.

Most people put off a switchboard upgrade because nobody's ever told them what's actually involved. So here it is, start to finish.

We look at what's there now, what the house is running, and what you want to add later. A new kitchen, ducted aircon, an EV charger. That's what decides how the new board gets set up.

On the day your power's off for part of it. We tell you how long upfront so you can plan around it, and we work around the fridge and anything else that matters.

You end up with a board that has safety switches on every circuit, room to grow, and labelling that means the next person isn't guessing.

Usually one day. Then you don't think about it again for 30 years.

Getting solar quotes and they all look the same? Here's what to sort out before you start comparing them.

First, how your house actually uses power. If everyone's out until 6, a system designed around daytime use isn't going to do much for your bill. That one question changes the design, not just the size.

Second, your roof. Which way it faces, how much usable space there is, and whether the neighbour's tree is going to shade it by 3pm.

Third, what's coming next. A battery, an EV, ducted aircon down the track. Allowing for it now costs very little. Retrofitting around it later costs a lot.

Fourth, who's actually doing the install. Plenty of quotes come from a sales office, and the crew on your roof is whoever was available that week.

By early afternoon there's a airconditioner system installed, the pipework's run and tidied up, and the house is finally cooling down.

This house had been a sweat box every summer. The one nobody wanted to sit in from December through to March. It's now the coolest house in the family

Most system installs are done in a day, and we clean up after ourselves like we were never there.
