Christmas is less than a week away! Cue panic!
With so much to think about and tick off for the Christmas period, we thought we'd add just one more thing to your list!
Christmas lights and decorations!
Christmas lights and decorations can look beautiful and add to the spirit of Christmas but its important to ensure they are safe, otherwise they can quickly become dangerous and faulty causing electrical incidents.
Here are some safety tips when putting up and using Christmas lights and decorations to ensure your Christmas doesn’t end in disaster.
1- Always use the lights/decorations, extension leads, power boards for their intended purposes. e.g. Indoor lighting should not be used in the outdoors.
2- Turn off lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
3- Use Australian compliant lights only. Lights bought from overseas sellers may not meet our current standards and can cause fires.
4- Do not pass electrical leads through windows, doorways or in walkways. This can result in them becoming damaged, faulty, and create tripping hazards.
5- Check there is no exposed wiring, especially with older decorations and lighting.
6- Outdoor lights have an IP rating number (e.g., IPX3, IP23, IP44) showing how weatherproof the light is – outdoor lighting must have a rating of at least IP23.
7- Flood lights, halogen lights and other similar styles can become very hot, ensure to keep them away from anything that might catch fire.
8- Keep electrical leads away from water.
Have a safe holiday season! 🎄
