Native bee spotted!! This metallic green beauty is a Homalictus bee, native to Australia, and pollinating my calendula (marigolds) like a pro! This small suburban garden used to have only 6 species - lawn, an apple tree, white bird of paradise, and a couple of shrubs. Now, it has over 50 species just in the area surrounding the lawn! I simply lost count! Adding a native and exotic biodiverse edge to your lawn is a simple way to add gorgeous flowers and attract native pollinators to your garden, and your neighbourhood. Thank you, bees, for pollinating my veggie patch this summer!I will plant more flowers for you this autumn!

P.s. I am very open to alternative IDs on my bee, as I'm a botanist but only an insect enthusiast!

Wishing everyone a happy new year! I travelled and saw many beautiful natural areas for the New Year's period, and it's so cleansing and connecting to be in nature - definitely refreshing having a swim in that ice-cold water! I hope you are also feeling refreshed and ready for a new year - perhaps with resolutions to be more eco friendly, or to connect more with yourself or with nature. Post your resolutions below!

Need more time for yourself or your family? I can help make your garden low-maintenance, so it's beauty doesn't need mowing or watering every week.

Or perhaps you'd like to create habitat for our unique native animals and insects? There will be posts this year to suggest beautiful flowering plants to do just this! These can even support predators and pollinators to help your veggie patch!

Wanting to learn more about traditional plants and their uses? Native medicinal and edible plants are truly fascinating, and I'm grateful for the knowledge I've gained from local Kaurna people and further afield, who have that continued connection to the land and have shared this with others.

This is Native Flax, Linum marginale! This is the first one I've grown myself and I am overjoyed to see the soft, delicate foliage dotted with these beautiful blue flowers. This low, perennial herb produces lots of edible seed that you can use in place of regular flax or linseeds! I have already collected some seed to start growing my own, though I'll admit I haven't eaten any yet! I always like to see the plants I recommend in the wild or in gardens, and growing it myself means I can work out how much care they need (which for this one, is almost none thanks to some decent rain!). This way, I can predict how the plant will look in your garden, and if it's suitable for your area and needs! Maybe my Native Flax seedlings can end up in your garden next Autumn?

Hello everyone! With the holiday season upon us, many of us are getting into home cleanup and garden tidying tasks, so why not start planning a low-maintenance garden ready for next year? I can help you create a no-mow native lawn (no more mowing on that pesky verge or small front garden!), a butterfly heaven for kids to frolic in, or a bush tucker garden to admire and taste.
