Very pleased to harvest ‘Bunyards Exhibition’ broad beans today (21st Aug 26) which are well out of season here in Yorkshire and most of the UK. It was a long shot trying these in late June and then of course came the heat 🙈repeatedly! Nevertheless, despite the ‘wrong’ conditions for these plants they have produced a worthwhile crop. Lots of watering and a reduced yield but….He/ she who dares, wins… I guess.

Self blanching celery going well on the allotment. Planted out from modules and grown from seed started off in March. Plenty of water needed through the summer but no need to dig a trench for self blanching types. I may still put a bit of cardboard around the outer edges nearer the end of summer to exclude a little bit of light.

A nice heart forming in my butterhead over winter lettuce. Thìs has been grown in a cold frame with only limited exposure to outdoor conditions. Despite the recent heat it hasn’t bolted so I think it’s time to harvest it before it does ! Thia is a nice bonus during the so-called ‘hungry gap’! It is possible with a bit of planning to have lettuce for almost all year round with a bit of luck…

Conference pears are setting nicely already here on my allotment in North Yorkshire. The seasons seem to move quickly these days compared to yesteryear! Maybe I’m just getting old 🤣. Either way, it’s great to see 😁

I’m growing some lavender from seed. Pretty quick to germinate ( 2 weeks ) in standard temps. A great way to fill a bed for just a few price per plant. Thìs pot is purple but the colour doesn’t really show!

I’ve got a row of winter radishes : the cold tolerant variety ‘black Spanish round’. Not a variety for the summer n warmer temps but it doesn’t mind the cold.

The early seed potato chitting is starting to come on apace now. Haven’t bothered with egg boxes or anything fancy. I’ve just put them on some staging. Good light and frost-free temps should do the job !
