From median strip to community landmark | Clovelly Road Pocket Park "Birdcages", Randwick NSW

Not every great public space starts with a blank canvas.

Along Carrington Road in Clovelly, an underutilised traffic island has been transformed into a distinctive pocket park that is redefining how urban spaces can serve local communities.

Delivered by FORGE in collaboration with Randwick City Council and JMD Design, the project features three sculptural "birdcage" arbours that combine architectural steelwork, integrated lighting, seating and landscaping to create a welcoming place to pause, meet and connect.

While the finished result feels effortless, bringing the vision to life required extensive design development, innovative construction methodologies and careful coordination within one of Sydney's busiest suburban corridors.

The project is a powerful example of what's possible when ambitious clients, creative designers and specialist delivery teams come together to challenge convention and unlock the potential of overlooked spaces.

Great placemaking isn't always about creating something new; sometimes it's about seeing what's already there differently.

Greenhouse-inspired play takes shape at Bankside Estate

It’s been a big few weeks for the FORGE team in Victoria, with site works now complete on a striking ‘greenhouse’ inspired play structure at Bankside Estate in Rowville, located 35 minutes south-east of Melbourne.

Set beside the Corhanwarrabul Creek wetlands, each structure is designed to complement its surrounding landscape while creating places for kids to play and families to relax and come together within the 68-hectare master-planned community.

This one was a true team effort. Starting from Tract’s original concept, we worked side by side with their designers to refine the structure, balancing what’s possible to build with what makes play exciting. From there, detailed engineering and rigorous testing set the project up for a smooth install on site, led by ULS Group.

The playground is now open to the Bankside community, and we look forward to seeing it become a place where local families play, explore and connect for years to come.

Build it and they will come… and keep coming!

It’s now been more than a year since the spectacular Greenheart Robina Parklands and playground officially opened on the Gold Coast, and families continue to enjoy it in their thousands.

Located on Stadium Drive at Robina, FORGE played a central role in the design, detailing, manufacturing and installation of the parkland’s hero play structures in collaboration with Place Design Group and lead contractor JMac Constructions for the City of Gold Coast.

The one-of-a-kind adventure playground features two soaring custom-designed play towers with interconnecting net bridges, winding tunnel slides, climbing walls, swings and a large spinning sphere.

There is also a separated junior play space with cubby houses, small slides, talking tubes and spring rockers for younger children.

Filled with smiles and laughter seven days a week, the sweeping community green space has quickly become a must-visit social hub where local families and visitors can meet, relax and, of course, play!

With Queensland set to welcome the world for the 2032 Olympics, it’s the perfect time to be investing in public spaces that deliver for locals and visitors alike. Great play and parkland infrastructure is part of the experience, and the real legacy is what lasts long after the closing ceremony. Projects like Robina Greenheart Parklands are built to be enjoyed by generations of Gold Coast families well beyond the Olympics.

Robina Greenheart Parklands is the second destination playground project FORGE has completed for the City of Gold Coast, following the award-winning Peninsula Playground at Broadwater Parklands which opened in 2022. You might expect an almost 2km skywalk to prompt plenty of engineering questions. At the 2026 Small Bridges Conference, some of the most interesting questions were about how the Tamworth Skywalk got off the ground in the first place.

FORGE Director Ian Joyce and Tamworth Regional Council Project Engineer Lachlan Mackiewicz shared the story of the $18 million structure. Council’s funding journey drew particular interest, as did the challenge of making an ambitious design buildable.

You come for a look around the lake. The kids spot the giant Swamp Lily pods. Before long, everyone’s found a reason to stay a little longer.

FORGE delivered the play structures, bridges, shelters, custom seating and viewing deck for Stockland’s Lake Foreshore at The Gables. Working closely with AECOM, we helped refine the design ideas so each structure could be built and would feel at home in the wider precinct.

Now children of different ages can find their own level of challenge in the play pods. Families can wander around the lake, find a spot in the shade or get together for a celebration. It’s the sort of place where a day out becomes a memory.

Check out what’s coming to Wentworthville!

FORGE is in the process of delivering a new play space at Lytton Street Park as part of Cumberland City Council’s broader park revitalisation.

With many Wentworthville residents living in apartments and townhouses, local parks offer valuable space to get outside, play and spend time together.

The project forms part of the first stage of the park’s masterplan, creating a welcoming destination that encourages play, recreation and community connection. Somewhere to bring the kids, catch up with friends and enjoy more time outdoors.

Designed to complement future upgrades throughout the precinct, the play space will help transform Lytton Street Park into an active and inclusive space for all ages.

It feels surreal to think a full month has already passed since the Tamworth Skywalk officially opened on 29 August.

After years of planning, design and delivery, seeing the community step onto the Skywalk for the first time was a pretty special moment for everyone involved.

As principal contractor, FORGE was fortunate to be part of such a marvellous project, and to work alongside Tamworth Regional Council and the many people and organisations who helped bring it together. The relationships built along the way are something we’ll take with us long after the project is complete.

We hope the Skywalk becomes something the Tamworth community feels a real sense of ownership and pride in, and a place that people can enjoy for many years to come.

At this year’s Small Bridges Conference in Adelaide, one theme kept coming up: the traditional approach to design and delivery is being challenged.

More councils, designers and project teams are recognising the value of bringing contractors into the conversation earlier, helping identify buildability, site constraints, materials, risks and costs while the design is still taking shape.

It’s an approach we’ve been championing at FORGE for years through our FORGE Methodology.
