Tasmanian Irrigation was pleased to attend the launch of the Kanamaluka / Tamar Estuary Ecosystem Health Report Card 2026 this month — an important, science‑based assessment of the health of one of Tasmania’s most significant river systems. The event brought together government, industry, community organisations and regional representatives, highlighting the strong shared commitment to protecting the estuary. The Hon. Guy Barnett officially launched the report, and Aunty Nannette Shaw delivered a powerful Welcome to Country, reminding us of the river’s deep cultural significance. As a proud supporter of the Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers - TEER Program, Tasmanian Irrigation values the role of robust science, long‑term monitoring and collaboration in improving the health of our waterways.

Thanks for stopping by at FarmX 2026!

It was great to spend the day at FarmX talking with farmers, irrigators and industry representatives about irrigation development across Tasmania.

Our team enjoyed answering questions about the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (SWISA), including construction progress, environmental management and what the project will mean for irrigators in the region. We also spoke with landholders about Farm Water Access Plans (Farm WAPs) and how they support the sustainable use of irrigation water.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stand and shared their ideas, questions and experiences. Events like FarmX provide valuable opportunities to connect directly with the people who use and benefit from Tasmania's irrigation infrastructure.

Come and talk construction with us at FarmX 2026!

John Wright, Project Manager for the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (SWISA), will be there to answer questions and walk visitors through the engineering, environmental planning and day-to-day management involved in delivering the project.

The $124.2 million project includes approximately 102 kilometres of pipeline, two pump stations and a balance tank. It will add 9,200 megalitres of reliable irrigation water to the existing scheme, bringing its total capacity to 14,860 megalitres and nearly tripling the amount of reliable irrigation water in the region.

Protecting Tasmania's wildlife while delivering vital irrigation infrastructure.

At Great Bend, part of the $124.2 million Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (SWISA), loose rock needed to be removed from a cliff above the pump station to improve safety for workers and protect critical infrastructure.

Rather than using more intrusive methods, specialist rope-access crews carefully removed the rock by hand. The low-impact approach was chosen to minimise noise and vibration and avoid disturbing a nearby maternal Tasmanian devil den.

It's a great example of how Tasmanian Irrigation and Shaw Contracting are working together to deliver major infrastructure while protecting the environment and continuing to support local irrigators.

A major milestone for the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme (NMIS) — the final section of the scheme's 152.4-kilometre pipeline network is now in the ground!

More than seven years in the making, NMIS is Tasmanian Irrigation's largest scheme constructed to date. From October 2026, it will deliver 25,500 ML of highly reliable irrigation water each year to around 50 irrigators across the Northern Midlands, helping drive productivity, resilience and growth in one of Tasmania's key agricultural regions.

A huge thank you to the many staff, contractors, suppliers and landowners who have helped bring this milestone to life.

The scheme has been jointly funded by the Australian Government, Tasmanian Government and irrigators through the purchase of water entitlements.

Northern Midlands irrigators got a sneak peek at the Poatina Buffer Dam and Pump Station this week.

Irrigators had an opportunity to tour the infrastructure that will soon be delivering water to their farms, meet the Board Chair and CEO, project team and engineers, and ask questions before the scheme moves into operation.

With construction substantially complete, commissioning is underway and first water remains on track for 1 October 2026.

Representing an investment of approximately $218 million, NMIS is Tasmanian Irrigation’s largest scheme by capital value and summer delivery capacity. It will deliver 25,500 megalitres of high-surety irrigation water each season through more than 150 kilometres of pipeline and associated infrastructure.

Thank you to our irrigators for their ongoing support as we undertake final work to complete the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, the Tasmanian Government and Tasmanian irrigators through the purchase of water entitlements.
