Photo shows damage to an electrical cable that was in contact with a halogen down-light globe. Electrical cable is good to about 90 deg. These lights can run at over 300 deg Celsius. It's now been replaced with an LED fitting and fortunately there was no major damage.

A box of rat poison once a year is a small cost to avoid this sort of infestation. This is one of the worst I have seen, the entire ceiling was covered in poo. Avoid wiring damage, smells, noise and disease. Every house will have rodents at some stage.

Always turn off the power before you or anyone else (friend, family or trades-person) enters a ceiling space.
It's very common to see this type of damage, caused by rodents.
Be sure to turn off every Main Switch (many homes have more than 1 main switch) at your switch-board!! If you have overhead power avoid the cable which runs to your switch-board as this will still be live!
