Choosing the right timber species for your deck comes down to looks, durability, and understanding how wood breathes. When timber dries out, it undergoes a decrease in density and volume (shrinkage)—meaning your boards will naturally shrink and expand with the weather.
Here is how the top species compare:
Ironbark & Spotted Gum: These ultra-high-density Australian hardwoods have incredibly tight cell structures. Because they are so dense, they absorb and lose moisture very slowly, making them highly stable with minimal, predictable shrinkage.
Blackbutt: A gorgeous, fire-rated hardwood with a medium-to-high density. It handles the elements brilliantly but has a slightly higher shrinkage rate than Spotted Gum, meaning precise installation spacing is critical.
Merbau: A popular, high-density import known for its durability and rich color. It's highly stable with low shrinkage, but because of its density and structure, it is prone to "tannin bleeding" (leaching red oil) when it first gets wet.
The Golden Rule: No matter the species, always factor in a 4–5mm gap between seasoned boards. If you're building with unseasoned or wet timber, install them tight—they will naturally shrink down to a lower density and create their own perfect spacing as they cure! 🛠️📐
