The most valuable space in many homes isn't a kitchen, living room or even a bedroom.

It's the space between inside and outside.

A well-designed terrace, courtyard, deck or garden connection can make a home feel dramatically larger while improving natural light, ventilation and day-to-day enjoyment.

Sometimes the best addition isn't another room, it's a better relationship with the outdoors.

The most expensive mistake people make before talking to an architect?

Assuming a property can do something simply because someone says it can.

We’ve seen people purchase sites believing an old development approval or planning pathway was still available, only to later discover the planning controls had changed entirely.

In one case, a site previously associated with seniors housing had since become affected by biodiversity mapping, meaning the original planning assumptions no longer applied.

Another common one is spending tens of thousands renovating a kitchen or bathroom in the “wrong” location, only to later realise the layout limits the entire future potential of the home.

The reality is:
▪ Planning controls change,
▪ Sites have hidden constraints,
and early design decisions can either unlock value… or quietly destroy it.

A short conversation before purchasing, renovating or planning can often save enormous amounts of money, time and frustration later.

Good architecture isn’t just about how something looks.
It’s about understanding what’s actually possible before you commit.

Are Australian homes simply too big?

Australia builds some of the biggest homes in the world, but are we actually living better because of it?

The average new Australian house was around 236m² in 2019/20, larger than the average new home in the US.

At the same time:
▪ Building costs are rising,
▪ Block sizes are shrinking,
▪ Energy costs are rising,
and many “extra” rooms barely get used.

Good architecture isn’t always about adding more area.
Sometimes it’s about making less space feel better.

We’re pleased to share that DA approval has now been granted for our Pharmacy project in Turramurra.

Located on a prominent corner site, the project reimagines a long-standing local pharmacy through a contemporary architectural response that strengthens the streetscape while improving functionality, accessibility and the customer experience.

The design carefully balances modern retail requirements with the scale and character of the surrounding neighbourhood, creating a refined and welcoming addition to the village precinct.

Good architecture is often defined by the details.

Not just the junctions between materials, the alignment of a shadow line, or the precision of a stair, but the details of how people live, how light enters a room, how a home responds to its landscape, climate and local context.

At every scale, thoughtful detailing shapes the experience of architecture.

For us, attention to detail means understanding the unique qualities of each site, the character of each neighbourhood, and the everyday rituals of the people who will inhabit the space.

It’s these details, both built and contextual, that create architecture with clarity, longevity and meaning.

Construction is officially underway at JACK HOUSE in Gordon and we’re excited to see this heritage alterations + additions project coming to life on site.

This project carefully balances contemporary family living with the character of the original heritage home, creating a light-filled new addition that respectfully contrasts old and new.
